i7 860 Overclock

Thread Starter
So I've been trying to OC my 860 and my aim at first was 4GHz, but at 3.8 I started getting 70-75c temps with HT on with 21x/181blck and a little above 1.3 vcore, 1.3 VTT, 1.65 DRAM, 1.80 PLL, and 1.05 PCH. At this point I decided that I should just turn HT off since the majority of the people on this site use a 2500k for gaming anyways (and I do absolutely no video editing or processing, only a decompression here and there).

I haven't started testing with HT off yet, but I have a few questions before I do because I don't entirely understand some of my BIOS.

For one, I know there are 21x and 22x multipliers. Apparently 21x is the highest multi without trubo, and 22x enables turbo. I have read guides that tell you to not use turbo, so should I use 21x or 22x? And one more thing, I know that I should disable all power saving features while I'm trying to get a stable OC, but I've heard that it is good to enable them after you get your system stable (C1E, Speedstep etc) should I enable some of these after getting stable?

Now my last question is which program is better for stability testing? I used IBT with 5 standard passes while trying to achieve 3.8, then 5 passes of max after I got there.

Would prime 95 small fft be better since it wouldn't give me as high of temps, and does IBT put unnecessary strain on my system?

I appreciate any help as I'm fairly new to overclocking.

you should use multi 21x, and it's not that good to leave all the power saving feature on when u have the cpu stable afterwards best to disable them. for stress testing do blend for 12 hours on prime95 and u good to go thumb.gif.

speedstep turbo etc needs to be disabled. You should post some hardware specs. And it looks like you need a better cooler if you want to reach 4GHz since I need 1.352 Vcore to reach 4GHz on my 870

A better cooler? blinksmiley.gif I thought the H70 was a pretty good cooling system. Also I think all my specs are in my sig but I'll post them here

i7 860

Asus P7P55D Deluxe

Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600 RAM

5970

and if I really do need better cooling I think I would be better off just bumping my fan speed up or turning off HT right?

Oh yeah and what multi were you using and did you have HT on to get to 4GHz?

Try OCCT - 2 hours of that and you're stable for sure smile.gif

I've found that this chip runs hot. I know my case is crap, so the airflow is crap, but tbh I'm disappointed with this OC. I've kept HT on, but I've heard that disabling it is good for 0.3-0.5GHz, so it could get you over the 4GHz line. HT increases average performance by 20%, so technically you'd need to increase clock speed enough to compensate

H70 should suffice, I had a H60 and I could reach 4GHZ.

Try remounting cooler, Remove, clean, apply ricegrain size of thermal grease and remount. If you remove cooler to check if thermal grease look OK you will get airbubbles.

I have a ASUS p7p55d deluxe mobo so you should be able to reach 4 GHz

Yeah I'll blow out my case and remove the voltage reducing cord so my fan speed is at maximum.

Except the one thing I still don't understand is why I should use the 21x multiplier over 22x. I've heard that a higher bclk requires more vcore, so shouldn't I be using the highest multiplier over a higher bclk?

higher blck needs more imc voltage not higher vcore, as to performance my experience is that it does not matter.

Oh well I guess that explains why I was having some trouble getting stable. I was increasing my Vcore while overclocking my base clock. What setting requires more Vcore?

He just told you, the IMC voltage, VTT, I'm not sure what it's called in the asus bios.

Try lowering your multi a bit, then find what voltage your IMC needs to be at for your desired bclk...say you want 191 x 21 for 4ghz, lower your multi to like 15x, set your bclk to 191 or whatever, try maybe 1.3 for your IMC, use maybe OCCT for 30-60min, increase until you're stable.

Then set your multi up to 21x, and adjust vcore until stable.
