[Wired] Man Successfully Flies With Custom-Built Bird Wings

Using videogame controllers, an Android phone and custom-built wings, a Dutch engineer named Jarno Smeets has achieved birdlike flight.

Smeets flew like an albatross, the bird that inspired his winged-man invention, on March 18 at a park in The Hague.

“I have always dreamed about this. But after 8 months of hard work, research and testing it all payed off,” Smeets said on his YouTube page.

Smeets got the idea from sketches of a futuristic flying bicycle drawn by his grandfather, who spent much of his life designing the contraption but never actually built it.

Dude.....

Interesting approaching using superhuge goofy wings like the albatross does.

Oh god...

At 0:21 the guy on the left starts running towards the camera. At 0:19 he's on the other side of the wing, and somehow he manages to run nearly trough the wingtip without clipping it. He also manages to cast his full shadow on the wing while his leg is still on the other side...

The shading on the wings does not match textile material as shown in the closeup, it's too reflective.

The guy would need to run really hard to get decent takeoff speed, yet he's wearing one of those squirrel suit things with textile between the legs that would make running really awkward.

The wings do not look fully loaded, loose textiles like that would billow and flap quite a lot under the load of a fully grown man.

Of course a picture perfect landing on the first attempt.

The climb is substantial, yet the airspeed is low. No bird manages that kind of climb by just waggling their wings a bit. They have to work really hard to get off the ground and gain speed.

The wide monowing design would be extremely unstable. No apparent stabilization mechanism is evident.

At 0:41 having attained an airspeed of about 2m/s he folds his legs back (however he does that). But the main point is, his legs would represent air-resistance which would would make him pitch down, so folding the legs up removes one force for pitching down. Moving the legs up also moves the center of gravity back, which would pitch up. But somehow he keeps straight on and doesn't just pitch up. Which is physically impossible.

The wings represent a lever about 2-3 meters long each. They are hinged on joints to motors about the size of a teacup acting on them on a lever about 10cm long. That is a lever ratio of 30:1, so each wing carrying half the average weight of a man (say 70kg) would translate to the equivalent of 2 tons at the end of the 10cm lever. So each of those servo motors is supposed to be able to pick up a load of 2 tons in a matter of fractions of seconds.

I will have to agree with the guy above on that the video looks really fake. Way to many thing's that just don't add up on how that should look in reality.

even if you don't pay too much attention, just looking at how he takes off, you can tell it's fake.

everyone's a professional rolleyes.gif

Anyone here ever flown a airfoil kite that big?

It can easily lift a 250lb man into the air.

Obviously fake to my eyes, and I'm sure somebody will be here shortly to tell everybody the physics why it is.
