Moving to Intel

Thread Starter
I've been an AMD fan since 2008. Started with a Phenom II x4 3GHz 940. I have the same CPU- same complete rig- and it needs to change. I've built a couple smaller AMD computers for some friends and such so I know a bit about what I look at when I see AMD. Intel? Nope. I have no idea, really.

what I'm looking for:
  • SFF case perhaps not SFF in that it needs a SFF PSU but a relatively small case- one no larger than 8"x24"x12" (which would be the space under my monitor).
  • Quad-core. I tried stepping down to dual-core (via a test rig) for a while. Didn't work out.
  • Upwards of 8GB RAM. My classes have begun to take a virtualization approach and it has me swapping out up to 3 VMs at a time for other VMs. I find 8GB a bit tight-collared.
  • I'm trying to cut back on the number of HDDs I have in any one non-server setup. I'm good on HDDs, I have more than enough for a single person should ever have. Win7 seems to just stop working for a few seconds to wait for a HDD to spin up.
  • I have a 6850 in my current rig which I can just move over.
  • I have a couple SSDs for boot/main.
  • I also have a 750W Corsair PSU. But fully modular PSU appeals to me. I don't mind an attached 20+4 and 4+4 P4.

Well whats your budget?

From and Intel build's perspective, this is probably laughable: 1000USD.

$1K with an Intel build will get you better than anything you can buy with AMD these days.

If you wait another month or so you can pick up an Ivy CPU. Otherwise you are looking at something like this if you were to buy today from Newegg:

i5-2500K - $220 or i7-2600K - $325
ASRock Extreme3 Gen3 Z68 - $125
8GB RAM - $45

Total: $390 or $495

Looks like you have everything else besides the case. So with all that extra money you can get a new GPU or another 6850 for CFX and your case of choice plus any other misc items.

I'd suggest waiting for Ivy though since it is like a month away and the prices for the CPU will be basically the same as the current i5/i7 lineup is.

You really can't go wrong with a i5 2500k or a i7 2600k. As for a motherboard depending on your form factor I would recommend you get a Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z/Gen3 since you seem to need a small case. As for RAM any brand should do. I'd recommend 8gb like Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 8GB, but if you want more here is G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB. As for a case...I'm not sure man. You are looking for something that lays flat right?

I've been thinking about Ivy Bridge. Wouldn't that edge down the prices of Sandy Bridge?
(I wanted to go for >8GB RAM)

Numerous Virtual Machines running at the same time (for now: windows server 2008, XP(changeable) and a second XP machine(static) )
I play some games from time to time. Generally, it's only Minecraft but that's maybe 2 hours a day.
Browse the web with 30 tabs open (20 not loaded), IRC, GMail, etc., etc. "normal" things.
Other than that, it's all on other machines which are Linux.

Oh right, my bad. ^ Get the Maximus IV Gene, the one I listed will not fit in a small case like you want. The Maximus Gene is an excellent board. However, if you do wait until Ivy is released here in another month there will be new boards with the Z77 chipset to choose from as well.

It probably would, but it wouldn't be by a good margin new. I mean they still sell 1st gen i7's on Newegg and their price has barely moved. They will sell for a good amount lower used though.

Then add another $40 or so for 16GB of RAM and you still have plenty of money to spare. Based on your needs I'd get the i7-2600K. So you're looking at something like this if you do not wait for Ivy.

i7-2600K - $325
Maximus Gene IV - $190
16GB of RAM - $90

Total: $605

Then you have $400 left for your case and maybe a new GPU or whatever else. The price will still be the same basically if you wait for Ivy and get an Ivy CPU.

Yes. My monitors are on arms which raise them up. I need something that fits to the aforementioned dimensions so it can fit under there.

I forgot to mention I need a cooler. I have a Noctua NH-D14 but its Intel mounting brackets are a... mystery to be had (in layman's terms: they're lost in a heap o' junk).
