ESXi - NAS / FTP / MEDIA Help needed.

So I'm starting to setup exsi and i'm thinking if it is really worth the overall overhead to isolate the servers or is it better to just do a debian/centOS install with multiple users, one for each service.

The system uses:

cpu: q6600
ram: ddr2 4gb
storage: 1tb main drive (wd black) + 14x(2tb) potential for media storage/ftp w/ hardware raid 5

I'm looking for someone that has done a similar setup and want their opinion on what to do.

The services i want it to perform:

Plex
ftp
ircd
apache
mysql
srcds
Image of the server in its current state ;) *note only one bay is used, will buy green 2tb once base server is operational (Click to show)

You could easily do it in ESXI it'd then let you be able to individually tweak things for each service

you might need more ram though just make sure things run really smooth

Ok i've got esxi setup right now without a single vm installed yet.
If this is the path i take in doing things I'll need to plan out how i run these services and under what OS.

I was thinking debian for all of them. Any Suggestions?

No personal experience with debian but i dont see any problems, just make sure each of the VM's can talk to each other properly

I haven't been working on the server due to a wisdom teeth operation, but I am back and have a few more questions regarding how I should set up my server so the nas and media server are optimized correctly to connect to the hardware raid effectively.

I have a plan in my head to do it as such but I am not entirely certain this is the way I should be doing it for speed and accessibility. (Ie. package or OS (freeNas or other) to use as the nas

HARDWARE LAYER
|
|
Hardware raid 5 or 6 --> Partition for the raid array
|
OS Drive (esxi boot drive - this is also where the vm's are located)

SOFTWARE LAYER
|
NAS (unsure)
(certain directories of the accessed from other computers on the lan)
|
MEDIASERVER(PLEX)
(certain directories of the partitions can be streamed to plex)
|
TORRENT BOX(deluge)
(downloads files into raid partition for sorting and renaming)

Bump for solution...

So far I've setup plex and deluge but I still don't have a way to access and store these files from the lan. I want to be able to use the datastore as storage instead of the vm itself and have these services access the datastore remotely.

Do I have to mount the vmfs datastore in the debian box? I have no idea how to go about doing this.

These particular ones are the old revision. I believe a new revision came out not so long after I bought these. These ones are a tight squeeze as the mounting holes didn't line up correctly, so I didn't have any room the mount the top one and it is now in held by friction biggrin.gif. Also the sata cables arn't labelled so you have to guess which bay is connected to the port on the back.
They also require you to bend down all the tabs in your case that are used for cd drives and other things, as the designers did put slots in...

Stock 80mm are loud so prepare to get yourself some noctua replacement fans if you do buy these.

The bays themselves are well designed and the trays slide in easy and lock securely.

Can't say much about the newer ones but from what I can see they are designed way better, they may still have the tab issue I mentioned earlier.
