hi i have been lookin into getting the Yamakasi Catleap Q270 SE 27" off ebay. But there is two choices. 1st one is the monitor for £271 shipped, which includes the 0 dead pixel check, the choice no2 is to get the same monitor for £219.95 but that doesnt include the pixel check so do you guys think its worth it paying the extra cash so that its checked for dead pixels?

Also how much would customs charge in UK?

The seller declares it at 30 pounds (i can't make the pound sign).

You could ask him to declare at whatever you want though.

The pixel check is nice, but people have said that they have received monitors with stuck/pixels even with the check, but it's really hard to find these pixels.

IMO just save the money and roll the dice smile.gif

Marked at £30 the customs fee will simply be VAT or £6. The shipping company also charges a fee tho.

http://www.dutycalculator.com/new-import-duty-and-tax-calculation/

Monitors imported to the UK:

Value <£135 = 20%
Value >£135 = 14% (Duty) + 20% of Value + Duty

Plus shipping company fee.

http://www.dutycalculator.com/help_center/will-there-be-any-extra-charges-from-the-shipping-provider/

If the monitor was marked with a value of £250 and shipped via Royal Mail, your total customs fee would be £100. Gotta love this country...

If marked as a gift and less than £36 there should be no customs charge tho.

Some people think the dead pixel check is bogus. I was reading on hardforum that a lot of people were getting monitors with dead pixels even after paying more for the check. It seems like they're just pocketing the extra money, since the numbers of monitors that DON'T have dead pixels outnumber the ones that DO have them. Receive the extra money for the dead pixel check, then if it just so happens that 2/10 (for example) still receive monitors that have dead pixels, get them to send it back. You still get 8/10 paying you extra.

Yeah if I remember correctly, someone asked a seller (who wasn't already offering the service) to do it, and the reply was that it would require opening the box (which makes perfect sense). Now I haven't bought a monitor is almost 7 years, so I don't remember if there's clear tape or whatever on the sides to indicate if it's been opened, but I would think that most would prefer an unopened box. Yes? tongue.gif

Anyway, that is pretty sad to hear if the sellers are actually being dishonest and still pocketing the money.

I would be careful in where we tread. I doubt they are outright practising fraud (advertising something, getting money, then not doing it). I just think what they are offering is not worth what they are charging for it - that is, it's just a way of offering a zero-sum benefit to a group of people by shifting the value of the product around, and profiting from it. Shady, but not dishonest.

Moreover, I believe the check happens at the factory, before the monitors are packaged.

Aye, that's how it's supposed to be. My display has arrived in the city, we'll see if the local DHL courier takes more time than the international part of the chain. In any case, I'll let you know what defect I get on my "perfect pixel" one.

On topic... no news from last week's "meeting"?
