Greetings all,
Here are the results of my 1st comparison between the hd 6990 and the hd 7970.
The rig used was exactly the same, latest drivers (12.2) + cap.
My 1st run compared both cards at hd 7970 stock clocks= 925@1375. All in all, I'm happy with the results. I may include the hd7970 OC results later on if the demand is there, but here it is, for those of you interested:

EDIT: included OCed 7970 results. Current config is 1125@1575mhz core volt: 1135. FAN profile untouched from stock. Please feel free to give tips on OC.

Here are the gpu-z max sensor results after all the OCed benches (temps, ingame, are usually between 60-75C):

2) BATMAN AC:
My 6990 took the lead here, but I'll have no problem playing on my new gpu:

3) Crysis 1: Here, the 7970 took the lead
6990 vs 7970:

4) Just Cause 2: won by the 6990. But again, I'll have no problem playing on the new gpu:

5) Saints Row the 3rd: The 7970 got way ahead. Maybe driver problems again?
config (SAME FOR BOTH):

6990:

7970: (save is not exactly on the spot, so there's a small difference, but it's the same place etc)

7970 OC:

6) Skyrim: run into a problem here. Could not disable vsync. Anyways, the 7970 won this round... skyrim was always funky with xfire, so maybe that's the reason:
EDIT: didn't include OCed pic because it caps at 60 on stock already.

Config (same for both):

6990:

7970: (limited by vsync... tried to force it off through CCC, no luck):
TESV_2012_03_20_21_52_27_748.jpg

CONCLUSION:
I'm happy with the 7970. I got awesome performance (win some, lose some) with less headaches and the chance of adding another 7970 down the road if I feel like it (not likely, but I like knowing I could if I wanted to).

So, thoughts, suggestions?

I hope it was a nice read for you AMD fans.

Pax,
Alex.

That's arlgiht, anyway you can type in the values? If not don't worry about it, I can check them later when I get off work.

Rep+, thank you very much. Interesting how they battle back and forth. I took a great interest to this because I'm debating if I want another 6970.

Thanks. I'm considering doing some light OC and adding another perspective to the thread, but I think it gives enough info as it is.

Well, so far I'd reccomend the 7970, if you can. But 6970 CF is no slouch... guess you'll play whatever you want, regardless. biggrin.gif

Good gaming.

To turn off Vsync in skyrim You add iPresentInterval=0  in one of the ini files in the save directory under [Display]

I cant remember which ini though.

Good comparison though.

Good gaming.

I don't only play for the Red team, looks like the GTX 680 is going to be really great too. Will be lots of options here soon. Of course I am pretty happy with my 6970 performance for now.

I know lots would be interested in the OC numbers. Not I, my 6970 already runs plenty hot and loud. I won't go louder/hotter lol.

Nice one Alex, I thought it would be a step up just so you wouldn't need to deal with driver issues or micro stuttering, seeing that the 7970 is outperforming the 6990 on games that have been out for a while despite the fact that the 6990 has more horsepower goes to show your decision was a good one. Even on the other games you shouldn't notice any difference granted you usually don't use 8x AA and just used it for the benches, the avg fps should stay at the 60 fps mark.
Congrats on the new board.
