Its always better to go for 1 high end card rather than crossfire due to various issues..(driver problems, micro-stuttering, heat, noise, power). For 1080p gaming, 7870 would be perfect. You will get around 40 fps average in battlefield 3 at ultra settings and 4xMSAA. More than enough for general gaming. As money is no issue, you can also go for 7970 and you will get around 50 fps average in battlefield 3 at same settings. However i would recommend you to go for 7870 as its price/performance ratio is best for 1080p gaming. 7970 is more intended for eyefinity setups not single 1080p monitors.

HD 7970 or 6870 CFX
6870 would have been fine. If you don't have it anymore I would go with a single 7870. No need for a 7970 or crossfired cards for that resolution and framerate.

CFX 6870, 7870 and 7950 will all be suitable (7950 maybe a bit too much, but if you was to go to a higher resolution you'd be fine). I use 1080P for gaming and I have a 6870 CFX, works great and the scaling is awesome.
It depends whether you want asingle card or a CFX set-up, pros and cons for both. My temps aren't desireable, but I just have standard cards.
I personally haven't had a single issue with drivers/support for my CFX set-up and although micro-stuttering exists - it's not a deal-breaker IMO.

If you are sitting far away from the TV, a lot of small details will not be picked up by your eye. i.e. 4x MSAA vs 8x MSAA.

But even if you do want "max" detail on everything, I'd recommend a single GTX 680 that's coming out next week. Single cards are more headache free than crossfire/SLI, and the 680 is very capable of 1080p games. It will be priced 500$+.
the biggest question of all.. whats the BUDGET?!

if its open end i´d say the 680 too..
