Koolance RIVE Block questions.

Thread Starter
Ok, so I just finished my build and I am having problems getting my 3930k to 4.8ghz. When running Prime95 it wants to logout of windows, when I log back in it just shutsdown. I don't think its my temps because watching them and I am never over 65 even under full load on the cpu. My thought is maybe the mosfets.

This brings me to the cooling question. I will be refering to this picture:
500

First, lets take a look at the Orange circle. I know this covers the VRMs. I bought this block used from a OCN user and it didn't come with any TIM pads. It did come with TIM paste in a tube. I took the rubber type pad off the RIVE on the vrm and stretched it out to cover all the VRMS here and then mounted to the mobo. Is this what I should have done? Is there a better solution?
Also, I need to know what software can tell me the temps of the vrms, the chipset, and the vrm that is uncovered and what would the identifiers be in that software (ie. cputin? alttin?)

Now lets move on to the Red circles. Here i just used some artic silver 5. Again, i'm not sure what software to use, but i tried HWmonitor and all temps there stayed (from when i could read) below 70*

Now the Blue circle. This is over 2 (apparent?) mosfets? However, looking closely it doesnt seem that its actually touching these components... I tried to put a little AS5 on them to see if I couldnt get it to close that gap, but I dont think its working, and again have no idea how to tell the temp on those because i dont know the corresponding abbreviations.

I know this is kind of a complicated issue and question, but I'm sure some people here can help me out, even if it takes like 10 people to answer my different questions.

You only need to put thermal pads on the mosfet (The top block over the CPU) and thermal paste on the south bridge (lowest part you mark as red circle)
You don't need to put anything where you have your blue cricle and small red circle.

I use a Monitor program that only tells me my Motherboard Temperature. its aida 64

Thanks for that info.

What did you use for the mosfets? I used the thermal pad that I pulled off the original mobo cooling setup, but I think (prolly me just being ocd) that I should have done something else. For one I hate touching TIM as i think the oils degrade the thermal quality, for another i hate using stock TIM anything, and 3rd I had to stretch it out to fit over all the mosfets, and I think thats not ok....

I was thinking about re-seating this and the cpu, I won't if i know my temps are ok, but still not sure how to check those. However, I was thinking about using one of these: http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l3/g8/c487/s1397/list/p1/Thermal-Thermal_Pads_Tape-Thermal_Pad_-_Mosfet-Page1.html

I was wondering which size i should get? Anyone know?

You need 0.5 mm thick pads for the mosfet, ebay has some

EDIT, the one you showed on your previous post are fine. As long as they are 0.5 mm thick

Thanks so much, I will be ordering some .5mm pads today then, and probably will reseat my cpu, chipset, and vrm blocks this weekend. Flip my fans around, and try this oc again.

wait.... its shows 2 gray pads on that.... each .5mm i dont have that second pad.... that means either i need to get one for some reason or i need to get a 1mm pad instead. Why is that second pad there? its not cooling on the board itself is it?

You can do it mate thumb.gif

It takes a lot of patience to OC sometimes, I always try to reach the hishest overclock with the lowest voltage. I've been reducing my voltage over the week, but every time I touch a voltage, I restress my system during 5 hours under maximum IBT stress

Looks like the cutout in the top (blue) circle is there because they needed another point to fix the metal part of the block down, and needed to avoid the components on the board. Those thermal pads you have coming should sort out the block contact issues you have.

DOH, and this is my problem all along.... that second pad isn't on vrm block because it wasn't on my original cooling solution...

On the original its not showing 2 pads, only the vrm pad. Should i have 2 pads or is the second (one closes to the mobo) designed for direct contact
399

Looking at other pics, it looks like there is TIM in both places... grr, i hope i haven't messed something up... I had an open box, and i'm guessing they removed that TIM pad on the bottom for some reason..... grr i was using the "original" as a guide....

This is a pic i pulled, and there are many more like it... am i missing the red rectangle TIM?!!

is it possible this has messed something up!? mad.gif

You bought an open box so probably the thermal pad was remove by the last owner. Just buy a new thermal pad w/ 0.5mm thickness.
