PC Build for high-multi tasking work.

Thread Starter
Ok guys, here's the deal: my dad has a crappy Dell computer with something like an i3-2100 and 4gb of ram, plus a normal HDD, and he says his computer is really slow, and it IS. He's running 3 monitors and has the Bloomberg Trading platform open, a browser with maybe 20-30 tabs, a couple of word docs open, and Excel spreadsheets ranging into the 10s of thousands and even hundreds of thousands of rows..rolleyes.gif

They take anywhere between 10 and 40 seconds to open.
My idea is to build him a new PC with a 2600 for the HT, a big SSD so he can open all his files in a snap, with maybe a WD Green backup drive, 8 or 16GB RAM, and some kinda AMD Discrete GPU for better Eyefinity (remember, 3 monitors!).

Any ideas/suggestions?

EDIT: lol forgot a board, some Asus h67 probably.

Hahaha, that also may be worth a try...although judging by his file-opening times, an SSD would have to be included tongue.gif

EDIT: Anybody else got a few suggestions? redface.gif

add an SSD to his current system and see how much his system "improves" also check to see if he is maxing out his ram. He shouldn't but if he has a page file. that will make a PC seem slow. Also, what browser is he using?

If worse comes to worse and he wants a new computer, have him try yours and if its good enough give/sell it to him. And now you still have the new SSD that he needs anyway wink.gif

get him an 8-core Bulldozer, SSD, and 16GB of RAM. im sure he doesn't even need the power of the sandy's architecture on each core. so a slower but with 8-cores will solve his problem.

I'll try an SSD upgrade, and will check the RAM too.

Seems as though letting him have my rig and getting another sounds popular biggrin.gif

Oh and he's using IE9 rolleyes.gif

EDIT: and the Bulldozer also may not be a bad idea....

Price for performance, yes it is a bad idea. A 2500K will beat it in ever aspect (@ stock and OC) and is cheaper($250 vs $220 retail).

Haha I just thought the extra cores may help. The 2600 or 2600k may help with HT for the multitasking, right?

yes.. but i´d say if he got 4 cores already the cpu is the last factor slowing him down

yes. the extra cores do help, but the sandy bridge architecture is much better than the FX architecture, so it prevails. If this is going to be an office PC. I would recommend you get a non-k version OR only OC to ~4.3GHz. It is very easy to get to 4.3GHz stable. You want a VERY stable PC for an Office PC, rather than a fast PC that is just stable.

I am a little biased when I say i will recommend a good ASRock board, but... I do like them a lot wink.gif

But I still stand by adding the SSD to his system first, and if he doesnt like it then add it to yours and have him try it tongue.gif
