Anyone think it would be worth waiting until we see some non-reference cooling models?

The reference cards come with an awesome vapor chamber which I 100% prefer. I like having hot air exhausted outside my case, rather than heating everything up inside.

Early reports are that it does have good OC headroom... though as always it varies with any GPU.

I'm sure it will be who can wait!

The MSI 7970 Lightning card is truly sick. It was built from the ground up like the EVGA GTX Classified ULTRA for over clockers. I'm sure the GTX 680 version will be just as awesome. Can you wait two and a half months? That's how long it was for MSI to release their Lightning version from reference on the 7970.

The ASUS DirectCU II will also be a great card I'm betting. Though most likely a three slot card and in my mid-tower I'm not thrilled with those.

I heard of that too...but how well does it scale as compared to the OC applied is 50,000 dollar question here...

Air-cooling? Maybe, from the leaked charts it doesn't look like temperatures have changed much (about 3 C less than 580 according to THG leak). It depends if you're willing to wait.

Water-cooling (like myself)? You're almost forced to get a reference card since full-cover blocks are usually only made for the reference design. You can get one of the universal blocks, but they're pretty ugly if you ask me. I'm hoping that EVGA comes out with a waterblock like the Hydro Copper II, I'd love to put one on mine smile.gif

And as others have said, if you want something like a Lightning or Classified edition it could be worth it in the end. I guess I could see myself waiting for it, but what's the use? I'm going to overclock it anyways, I've never cared much for binned cards. I get what I pay for.

Two notes (though we'll find out soon enough)... a) Fermi scaled better with clock than the Radeon 7970, which hopefully means Kepler does too.... and b) I saw a 3dmark OC that showed good scaling, but it wasn't something I can pin 100% as legitimate. Looking forward to finding out for 100% sure though.

Fermi was very good overclocker when cooled properly so it would be big disappointment if Kepler is worse in that area.
