Also must be killing the music industry.
The movie industry as well, let us not forget them.
I mean, it's sure coincidence that the last couple of years have been the most profitable since the inception of their industries.

And let's not forget how piracy is killing the shipping industry......just sayin'

As for Indie games, well, cmon dude,
Minecraft, Dear Esther, Natural Selection 2, Amnesia, Mount & Blade.
This is just to name a few Indie games that are wildly successful. The Indie market is booming as well, more than ever.

You forgot Witcher 1 and 2.

Within a decade or two we'll have software writing software, beyond the simple games and programmes they are creating now. Then we'll have software firms claiming they have 0 employees, like FANUC claim now.

I don't know about other media industry but game industry is not in good shape. For example, under pay their employee for what their degree/skill is worth (expect sound department and producer). This is because game are really expensive to make these days. A MMO cost at least 100 million, normal AAA cost at least 30 million(2 -3 years development cycle for medium size team). For a console game $27 per new game go to the publisher/developer. That means a 30 million game need at least 1 million+ copy sold to break even, and most good AAA game cost way more than that for example Diablo 3 is under develop for 12 years, The Old Republic cost over 200 million, and many many other example.
Of course there is success story like Minecraft. Low budget and sold a ton of copies.
Or world of Warcraft, it was gear toward have few hundred thousand subs over 1-2 years to break even. Yet it last over 7 years peak at over 12 million subs.
Here is a video if you are interested in the shape of game industry.

Most of the old republics cost went to voice overs...

MMORPG's are expensive to make and maintain, but if done right they rake in the dollar signs.

If Blizzard hadn't reassigned those developers to WoW Diablo III wouldn't have taken 12 years to develop. How long as The Old Republic been under development? I don't know much about the SW franchise so can't comment.

Games cost loads to make because they often bring in actors for voice overs to increase advertising. Witcher didn't cost 30m to make and it made the developers loads. Also the COD series won't be costing 30m per title as they keep reusing the same antiquated engine. I will gladly believe Crysis cost that much to make because they had to create a new engine from scratch.

WoW was never meant to last this long, which is why it's finally bleeding customers. However Blizzard have made more money than we can count with that one game and have been working on their next MMO for a few years already. MMO's cost lots but they're also expected to bring in lots over time.

The problem with the gaming industry isn't the profits these companies make because it's no different than the film industry. They also make lots of films, most fail because they're not meant to succeed greatly, but the companies still post record profits. The problem lies with the developers not getting enough for their hard work. Individual titles don't matter in the least, it's the overall business model that is what's strangling the artists, no different than the music or film industry.

Totally agree. Facebook games and freetoplay can go get stood on. They don't deserve my time or money.

LOL

Piracy is WRONG. No-one deserves to get a paid-for title for free. Copyright Infringement has done damage to the industry in the form of DRM and the move to Digital Distribution. I refuse to call it stealing or make out they're a lost sale and I willingly acknowledge that piracy can and does net sales (I know because I used to be there I pirated and then bought in my younger days) but to "LOL" at someone saying piracy is wrong is just insane. Getting something for free, that isn't free, isn't right.
