Ok....enough about this stuff, back on topic.....I hope all you guys still wanting a card get one soon. And I hope mine ends working and a good OC'er. The weekend can not come soon enough. Even though I get my card tomorrow, I won't get to play around with it till Saturday.

@Hambon7si

My question goes back to when BF3 came out. Why is it that the 6970 crossfire owners claimed thier 6970's were having no issues with thier 2GB limit? What's changed? I recall them touting that the 580 1.5 GB was limited but they were not having any problems with VRAM limits.

I'm going to assume they were lying about multiple monitors and playing maxed out graphic settings. Sounds like having MSAA off is the best way to get around the problem and keep up frame rates.

I believe SVthomas myself. He's been a straight foward user and not bias. So his explanation of those AMD users playing with MSAA off makes sense to me. Pity on them for lying giving false advice for those that did.

Same thing happened with 3 480's on my 2500k 5ghz, and same with my 2600k 5ghz HT on or off. If you hit your Vram limit, your fps will take a huge hit. All this was when I was running Surround on my cards and once I hit 1.5gbs of ram on my cards. If I backed off on the AA settings and kept it under 1.5gbs of usage, it ran fine. I've messed with 2 680's and they are great on 1 screen. They do not have enough Vram for using high AA on 3 screen setups. PERIOD. The 4gb cards should be AWESOME and not have that issue at all even once applying 16xAA.
Why don't you try raising your AA until you hit your Vram limit and see what happens. FPS dip for sure.
I'm sticking with my 7970's on my 3 screens and having no issues running 16xEQ AA with all Ultra settings in BF3, no motion blur, no vsync, and my fps is 70min at worst, 90-120fps avg, 160-180fps max.
Hey svthomas, you should try the NV inspector and load the profile for Crysis 2. I know there's one out there that will help the fps dips that happen in that game. I used it when I was on my 3 480's and it helped big time. I may have the profile at home on my backup drive. I'll look later for you. Also, I just pitched my sweet 2500k and got a real nice 2700k and it makes no diff really with HT on or off in BF3. Not going to help that much, just don't want to see you try that and it still not help thumb.gif

Thanks for the information, I will give the NV inspector w/ the crysis 2 profile a shot.

Here are the exact settings I had when the vram would fill (just for reference), and the only thing I was changing was the MSAA between 2x and 4x (at 2x it wouldn't fill, at 4x it would).

Graphics Quality - Ultra
Texture Quality - Ultra
Shadow Quality - Ultra
Effects Quality - Ultra
Mesh Quality - Ultra
Terrain Quality - Ultra
Terrain Decoration - Ultra
Antialiasing Deferred - 4x MSAA
Antialiasing Post - High
Motion Blur - Off
Anisotropic Filter - 16x
Ambient Occlusion - HBAO

I would take a screenshot but I am at work.

Both companies handle AA differently, so I can't say they are lying, they may have been using a work-around to get the job done. My buddy is running 2 6950's unlocked and he isn't playing BF3 so I can't test it myself or I would. If the settings they were using only had them hit 1.8gbs of ram and the same settings had 580's hit 1.6gbs of ram, then for sure the 6900's would have walked by. I was using my 3 480's since the day they came out and have been playing that fine line of staying under 1.5gb but above 1.4gb and it sucked. I was wishing I had the 3gb 580's at that point. Now having 3gbs of Vram, I haven't had a single Vram issue at all. BF3 has a problem with MSAA and no matter what card you are running whether it had 10gbs of Vram, you will still have a problem when trying to use 4x MSAA in the game.

Now take the ingame AA out of the picture and let's play a game. See how far you can push your AA in NCP and see what happens if you hit over 2gb, I bet the same thing happens, major FPS dips. I only have the option of 16xEQ with 2 7970's and same probably for 2 680 users. I can play with no fps hit with 16xEQ and Super sampling. If you can do that with the 680's in 5760x1080 res or above, I will be very surprised to see anyone's 680's keep 60fps+ once they enable 16xAA. The 680's are going to be on par with the 6900's as of Vram and high res. The 580's with 3gbs easily passed the 6900's when it came to running AA like that and it was proven when they came out. If the 680's had 3gb of ram right now, I'd be a little more interested myself, but until those 4gb ones hit the shelf, I'll still be using my 7970's. I'm still putting a single 680 in for my customers that want the best they can get on 1 screen, but if they are 3 screen users, they get a 7970 as of now. Can't wait for a good driver that's for sure, but won't give up my 3gb either.

@ Arizonian, you should never even be able to see what we're talking about with 1 1080p setup. You should be amazed by the 680 no matter what settings you have for AA. Try surround and things all change.

Uh... I don't have an issue at all; I'm just merely asking for more information, and asking (kindly, at that) for others to contribute what experiences they have as well. Why the hostility? headscratch.gif I too run Surround as well, and I understand what a VRAM limit is.

This guy (CallsignVega) certainly does have a lot more exposure to true VRAM limits at nearly *double* the amount of pixels as we run:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1220962/vegas-heavyweight-display-and-computer-edition-2012/440_40

Yet, his gameplay is very smooth, even in BF3; albeit with four GTX 680's and a highly overclocked 3960X. I don't know what settings he used, but I'm sure you're right that he probably does not have high levels of AA set.

Again, I'm just trying to find some information and see where, if any, disparity lies. Besides, a true hard VRAM limit looks more like the SLI GTX 580 results in the Apples-to-Apples comparison here:

http://hardocp.com/article/2011/06/28/msi_n580gtx_lightning_xe_3gb_sli_video_card_review/5

You would NOT be able to even get to the menu screen, let alone play the game. wink.gif
