Gentle Typhoon AP-15 vs. Cougar Vortex CF-V12HP

Just trying to gather some intel on this fans.

This is what I've got so far (based on manufacturer specs)

Gentle Typhoon AP-15's
Speed: 1850 rpm
Static Pressure: 2.06 mmH2O
Noise: 28 dBA
Air Flow: 98m3/h = 57.7cfm

Cougar Vortex CF-V12HP
Speed: 1500 rpm
Static Pressure: 2.2 mmH2O
Noise: 17.9 dBA
Air Flow: 119.8m3/h = 70.5cfm

This is all the info I've just gleaned off of the interwebz about these fans. From what I can see, the Vortex is the superior fan on paper. Does anybody have experiences with both these fans? Or at least the Vortex's? I've got some AP-15's right now, but I wouldn't mind picking up some Vortex's, if only because of the alluring, delightful orange they come in. RAWR.

I'm not so sure I would believe the noise specs for he Cougar. With Scythe they always post very accurate noise figures while everyone else seems to post specs for the fan running at like 5v or something.

Cougars are not bad fans though. I like APs for radiators more than case fans I think. My AP-14 case fans don't seem to do much of anything.

I would just go with the ap-15s i can garuntee first hand you will not be disappointed
also i agree with black the specs to me seem iffy... lower rpm but it pushes more air and has more static pressure? i highly doubt that

but if you really want them just buy one and test run it they are only 15$ a pop

Well these fans seem to beat out the Scythes in absolutely every aspect. Even about 10% more static pressure, which would make them great for rads.

I understand the questioning the specs, but maybe these fans are an engineering breakthrough and they actually deliver more air with less noise? I'm sure people probably poo-poo'd the GT's when they came out. I doubt the specs too, to a degree, which is why I'm here trying to get some more info, hopefully from someone that's got these fans.

Saw that video earlier. The two things I took away were: a) "slightly louder", b) pushes way more air.

Scythe is one of the few manufacturers with a reputation for integrity in their specs, and even those should be taken with salt because it's almost certain that their test conditions do not match your use. Fan specifications are complete anarchy and the only thing you can trust are your own results.

That said, the Cougars may be good. Haven't tried em or seen any substantial 3rd party tests on them.

However, if that Cougar produces 17.9 dba at 1500 rpm then I'm the prince of china.

dba can often mean very little as it doesn't describe the noise of the fans. Higher dba doesn't always mean the fans sound louder as different sounds at the same dba can seem louder to a person than other sounds. For instance, a blackboard being scratched at 20dba will sound louder than air moving creating 20dba.

I found a review about the cougar fan, sadly they didn't have GTs for comparison. Seems like the Cougar is a good fan, but nothing revolutionary. It has slightly lower performance and slightly less noise than a Noiseblocker Multiframe.

That review was good, thanks. Too bad it didn't compare it to any fans that I know of.

Here's a fellow OCN'ers review. Problem is, most reviews I find seem to be for CPU coolers. If I got these fans I'd probably look at them for case fans, if anything. Good static pressure to push or pull through filters, good CFM, etc.

Anyone here got any other info?

Well, I decided to go for it and pick up 6 fans for about $75. My justification is that with a fairly outdated C2Q right now, I'll need to get a new system eventually. I'll retire about half of my sig rig to a dedicated folding rig or something else, so I'll need the fans eventually. I've got 4 GT 1850's right now as well as a couple GT 2150's from the group buy on the way, but you can never have enough quality fans.

I'll try and do some sort of testing on them when I get the fans and some free time, probably early May.
