H80 doesn't seem any better than Hyper 212 (help please)

Thread Starter
I've been oc'ing my i7 2600k and am current running at 4.5 with 1.35 volts.

When running prime 95 I was getting up to 80-82 C with the hyper 212 and decided to go and buy the corsair h80. So far I am less then impressed and am wondering if my h80 needs to be rma's

Using the same overlock I've gotten up to 77 C.

My ambient room pc room temp is usually between 21 and 23 C.

I remounted the H80 but it didn't help. I'm using arctic silver thermal paste.

H80 fan is on the high level and mobo control has been disabled for the fan in my bios.

I am using push pull blowing air into the case. Before I had the hyper 212 blowing air out the back of my case. Now that the h80 is blowing air in I only have two 120 fans on the top of my haf 932 case blowing out.

This is my current fan situation.

PSU blowing out the top.
two 120 mm fans blowing out the top.
one 240 mm fan blowing in from the side
two 120 mm fans blowing in from the bottom
one 140 mm fan blowing in from the bottom front
push pull h80 blowing in from the top back.

How can you even tell if the pump is working or not?

I'm kinda pissed that this isn't keeping my moderate oc in the mid 60's C.

Thoughts?

My Rig is below.

that because the hyper 212+ is a legendary cpu cooler...and the H80 is your average market gimic 'all in one water cooler"

first off...with voltages like that you need a more beefier air cooler or a real water setup.

maybe try reseating your cpu cooler, reapply the TIM, and see if its better.

1.35v is a med voltage increase, and hyper 212 doesn't do that well with high voltages. they are better with anything less than 1.35v.

Try lowering your voltages. that seems a bit high for 4.5 ghz...i was able to get 4.5 ghz on my i5-2500k at 1.3v

A 5c drop is honestly about all I'd expect out of an H80, they don't perform noticeably better than the top-end air coolers and the 212+ is only a small step behind those.

That VCore seems high. With HT off on my 2600K I can get 4.5 at 1.2v
I only crank it up to 1.35 when I start going up to like 4.8+
My chip sweats off 4.5 at 1.2 but anything over 4.5 and it needs lightning bolts to power it.

But back to the cooler, I've heard tremendous things about the 212 and terrible things about the h80. I would try and sell the h80 and get a real setup, even if you start with a RX120 or something super cheap and build up it'll be so worth it.

With ht on i need 1.4v at 4.5 to be 100% stable

Looks like I got served by the gimic. Oh well. At least my case is neater.

Going back to my overclock. I actually bsod 124ed last night when running prime for less than an house @ 1.35 volts

Here is my oc config

core 100
mult 45
voltage 1.35
mem voltage 1.65 (running at 1866 instead of 2133)
vtt = 1.125
vrm = 350
cpu current = 140%

I'm fairly sure I just got a ****ty chip from intel and 4.5 is actually my limit.

If I go to 1.30 i'll bsod in less than 1 minute.

I doubt that is your limit since 1.4 or even 1.45 is fine for 24/7 use thumb.gif
