Intel® HD Graphics 3000 or Nvidia / Ati for HTPC?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I converted my main rig (signature) into a semi-HTPC after I bought a laptop. The reason why HTPC is because the Desktop is still connected to my monitor, with a keyboard and mouse and runs Windows 7. I still need it to function as a PC for certain task.

I got XBMC installed and everything is working good. I've ordered an Asus Xonar DX sound card (Using onboard atm) and a headphone, Superlux HD669 (Using a cheap brandless atm) to enhance my movie watching experience.

I know that its a step up going from onboard sound to a discrete sound card, but what about when it comes to graphics? Am I going to see better visuals compared to using the default gpu? ( assuming that the quality of encodes are the same)

P/s: There is no gaming involved, so i don't need a graphic card for games, just for movies.

Intel® HD Graphics 3000 <- should be enough for Movies, it is equivalent to a low end graphics card.

That blog is useless.... it tells nothing useful. It just rehashes specs. It does not even bother to provide any evidence or explanation.

Here are some HQV (video image quality) benchmarks.... the AMD APU does really well:

This. If you want to play some light games (like minecraft), get something with a passive heatsink, you can get some decent fanless cards from AMD and Nvidia now for a great price

Also, like DuckieHo said, the AMD APU is awesome (not to mention you can xfire the IGPU with a PCI one), but you're running a 2500k, so thats out of the question

I assume that there wouldn't be any quality difference if I were to stick with my current graphic processor?

Doesn't the Intel HD3000 have a bug causing issues with video? Making the sound and video unsynchronized.

Go with an AMD APU for an HTPC.

i found that the intel graphics were fine, as long as you had the right drivers.

However, you could get a cheap graphics card and that will work even better.

Intel HD Graphics series are perfectly fine for HTPC. People complain about 23.976 fps problem on Intel HD (a screen jadder on Bluray playback), but they are forgetting that Llano also has the same problem (Llano does 23.978 fps instead).

Here is my take,

Low power (energy efficient) HTPC -> Intel HD
Light gaming in addition to HTPC -> AMD Llano
