Since i have this laptop ( sig-rig ) OC is basically a common thing, as is day and night cycle, or the fact that each evening i got to bed to then wake up in the morning to start the day. Even though the CPU cant be overclocked i still use software like Throttle stop to play with clock at least in the specified range. And Afterburner for all the OC fun.

I can tell you that i am never going back. I have never owned a water cooled system, so there is something new i will try soon enough. But in general, once you start overclocking / building your PCs you cant go back. Its simply not possible smile.gif

It's been shown in many reviews (see [H] ones, especially ones with SLI vs. CFX) that Nvidia GPUs require a bit more CPU power if you want to get the most out of your card(s)

Thats not true anymore. It hasn't been that way since 480 Geforce cards. Its not necessarily a "bottleneck" per-se has to do with the amount of multi-threading not going on. A lot of games use one or two cores, which also includes data going to the GPUs. GTX 580s benefit up to 4.8GHz on 2500/2600Ks, even in single card system....... statuses. Geforce seems to be able to take in a ton of data, while CPU overclocks on AMDs have been shown negated, even hurting performance sometimes. We only see the trend/correlation, we do not know exactly the cause. Putting it bluntly, Geforce cards increase in performance the faster your CPU IPC / IPS is.

I don't really see a 3.8ghz 920 bottlenecking the card that badly to be honest. Most of these reviews use stock CPU's so honestly TPU actually probabally used a faster CPU then most. Regardless it looks like a nice card. I'm a bit puzzled by some of their decisions (compute performance, memory bandwidth, even VRAM considering it's their top-end card) but for someone doing your standard 1080p gaming you can't buy anything better.

Still with a 7970 that will hit 1300 mhz I'm glad I bought this card. Been running for three months strong and been just killing any game I throw at it. The one thing I do not like at all about the 680 is how they've kind of gimped overclockability and for this reason alone it's not the card for me.

As someone who almost exclusively plays BF3, the results of the 680 make me think that's a better fit (especially with the price difference) for my gameplay style. Can't justify the 680 quite yet, but the 670 or 660 might be equivalent (in BF3) to a stock 7970, which is amazing.

I have benchmarked everything under the sun as of late, and I already commented its not AMD GPUs that get benefit. Its Geforce cards.

E: and again it's mostly the GeForce cards seeing benefits from moar CPU. If the 7970 is showing differences then I wonder what happens with the 680.
