This is a review where both are oc'd and the GTX 680 wins out handily still: http://alienbabeltech.com/main/?p=28910

Anecdotally speaking, I have seen a few 7970s go for $460-475 today on forums around the net. Pretty interesting to see a card depreciate by $100 so quickly after the 680 shows.

We're pretty sure that most (sanctioned) reviews that you'll read on the Internet today will unashamely proclaim that the GTX 680 is the best single card around, but the truth is most users who buy these cards are going to overclock their cards to the limit and then both Nvidia and AMD flagships are going to trade wins at the top. The lackluster compute performance and inferior memory bandwidth will hurt the GTX 680 in multi-screen, maxed out image quality, high end gaming. We also estimate that the BOM (Bill of Materials) cost on the HD 7970 is higher, given the higher end VRMs/more phases and larger cooling system.
That's all really. GG for Nvidia on 50% better performance.

1250mhz core is not normal for a standard OC, even on loud fan settings with bumped voltage, for reference Radeon 7970's. And even there, the GTX 680 wins out eek.gif . Thanks for the links!

One other thing to take into account on the 680 OC results; these will be hand picked cards and therefore better that a lot of other cards.

Doesn't change the reviews, as the 7970's would have been hand picked too, but it will be interesting to see how the "production" cards behave in the wild.

So... They're comparing a self-overclocking card at 1150 against a 925Mhz card?

Meh. It's still not the 30% better than the 7970 I heard a while back for 300$ xD
'
I find it funny that people are so happy and just has to called another card a total piece of trash by losing by 3% being released 3 months ago. Newer always better biggrin.gif

With a score normalized to 100%, a 94% relative score means what he said. 6% slower is not the same as 6% faster. EXAMPLE: 100 vs. 125, it is 80% as fast as, or 25% faster than (100 is 80% of 125, but 125 is 125% of 100). So, the techpowerup chart does *not* show that the gtx680 is 6% faster. It shows it is more. That is of course if you consider a normalized index including anomalies and a single number, relevant to actual performance.

Yeah, many reviews touted loud-but-"stable" radeon 7970's that weren't fit for 24/7 use as "normal", when in actuality most of them hit around 1050-1100mhz without ramping the fan high + volts high, and being actually 24/7 stable. Good point!

overall impressive card. I am not sure it's worth the $523 i just payed out for it but the reviews have been great. just the fan-bois from both sides always try to ruin a launch of new tech.

i been on OCN for years now, and have learned to stay away from these kinds of threads as they as just fill with immature non-relevant info full of bias.

thanks to all u who have posted such nice info to help me make a decision. thumb.gif

How in the world would you have any idea what a "standard OC" for a 7970 is? Most people on OCN are easily over 1200. You are seriously an annoying person. Fact of the matter is that the 680 doesn't let you enable any more settings then the 7970 does or allow you to play at a higher resolution or even have that much better framerates. A person with a 680 is having the same game experience I am so your glee about the 680 and supposed demise of the 7970 is really misplaced.

Any arguement to be had regarding the 7970 is moot, without a price base. The 7970 is irrelevant as it stands now... only due to price.
