[Various] NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 Review: Retaking The Performance Crown - Page 44

Nvidia's won this round, if you ask me. thumb.gif
Looks like I may be in the market for a gtx 660 TI, if the price wars kick off as I hope.
This reminds me so much of the r700/gt200 days, only it is reversed. smile.gif

To be fair, I think AMD intended tahiti to be a jack of all trades, master of none. Nvidia has gone the more focused route, making a high end gaming chip(GK104) and (presumably) a high end compute chip(GK110). I think I prefer Nvidia's approach, but only because I don't much care for openCL/DirectCompute performance(no applications I run use it to great effect). Still; AMD's stratagy is probably better in the long run, and likely cost a lot less to develop. Pro's and con's man, pro's and con's.

Nvidia says drivers will fix this, but those drivers aren't due out for a while, so who knows.
As far as gaming performance goes, as soon as you clock both cards similarly, the performance becomes eerily close, so those of you guys that have an HD 7970 already, overclock your card to 1Ghz or a little bit higher, and enjoy your GTX 680-like performance from an AMD card. It's that simple. wink.gif

Huh? This is supposed to be the mid-range Kepler. Not to mention it has less transistors and performs better. Isn't that a good thing? You're making it sound like Nvidia failed.

GTX 680 is better, fact.

GTX 680 is better, fact.

Better is such a subjective term.

  • Slightly faster on gaming? Yep
  • compute power? Not really.
  • power consumption? sorta (althought Tweaktown used 3DMark 2011 to measure power usage, and actually found that the GTX 680 used 70-watts more under load than the HD 7970. Call me skeptical about Nvidia's reported power usage on the GTX 680.)
  • Driver support: As of today, they're both bad.
  • Price? yes, for the moment.
  • multi-GPU scaling? about the same as HD 7970.
  • Overclocking? The HD 7970 seems to overclock a little bit better.

Is the GTX 680 better overall? Hardly.

Both the HD 7970 and the GTX 680 are very good cards. If you can't accept this FACT, you're only fooling yourself.

Anyone saying either card is a failure is a moron. Fact of the matter is when OC'd they are the same / slightly favoring the 680. No where near the performance difference between the 6970 and 580. If anything AMD made up a lot of ground this generation. HOWEVER the 7970 is 50-75 dollars overpriced at this moment in time. With OC performance taken into consideration the second the 7970 is cheaper then the 680 it's the better buy. If you are buying a card right now though the 680 is the obvious choice. For the same price I'd say go with whichever brand/manufacturer you like more.

Also I do agree with the people saying both these cards are technically bad buys. If any of us were smart (and obviously planning on spending 1000 dollars on GPU power means we're not) we would be waiting for the 7870/660 type cards that will provide us with 80-90% of the performance for half the price. That's not what being an enthusiast is about though.

The 680 is very impressive but two things that caught me eye were

1) Max 7970 oc vs Max 680 oc, the cards are pretty much even, or the 7970 higher in some games (metro 2033)
see: http://www.hardware.fr/articles/857-23/performances-gpu-boost-overclocking.html
2) SLI scaling on the 680. I'm sure that can be helped with drivers though. Card was just released afterall

I'm getting two of them on my doorstep tomorrow to see what kind of OC's I can get - we'll see what happens. So far i've seen up to 15% scaling with 150MHz overclocks on the 680, which isn't enough IMO

true.

Well, for the first time since many years ago, AMD's top of the line is competing equally with nVidia's. That's the most important thing to realize from this gen..

It seems AMD and Nvidia have people fighting each other for them biggrin.gif

GTX 680 is a tasty card tho, AMD just needs to lower their prices.
