They have had a long time to improve drivers, what's taking them so long?

Because making drivers isn't as simple as some people here believe rolleyes.gif

The reality of CFX/SLI is that any scaling beyond 2-way is never good.

Yea but he's implying that AMD just needs better drivers and it will keep up or beat the 680. If that's the case, how come Nvidia can make great drivers at card release and AMD is still "working on it"?

Who are you referring to here, AMD or Nvidia? I see a lot of specific situations where drivers from both companies fall on their face. I agree, the Nvidia/BF3 results are a little shocking because it's such a popular game.

Well I'm tempted to try a 7970 setup, but it seems like AMD is always behind in the driver department.

Unfortunately a lot of the reviews have outdated results of the 7970, techpowerup and anandtech are one of the few sites with updated results for the 7970. WARHEAD alone has improved by almost 10%, and performance is still climbing slightly with every new BETA release. Nvidia will probably come with some great improvements as always, but the 7970s driver support and improvement is better than what I've ever seen from AMD before and maybe even better than what Nvidia has shown the last years. The "problem" is the high amount of releases per month makes each improvement seem minor thumb.gif The 7970 will never catch up to the 680 stock for stock though, that'll never happen and is wishful thinking at best.

The truth is that the 680s overall lead over the 7970 is less than 10%, and a lot smaller than what a lot of nvidia-fanboys claim and smaller than 580 vs 6970. The 7970 hasn't been rendered obsolete by the 680 either: a price cut to $450 and slight cuts on other cards, and AMD is back in the game.

Look at that, almost no scaling between 2x/3x/4x crossfire. Should I conclude 7970 multi-gpu sucks? Well I wouldn't, I look at ALL the results and develop a consensus. Same thing with the power consumption numbers, I see people nitpicking about how one review site performed a power consumption test but honestly there's like a dozen reviews up each performing the power consumption tests a little differently, but the majority of them reach the same conclusion.

I dont agree with his arguement but those graphs tell different stories. In the first one the 680 scales, but scales poorly. In the second one the 7970 doesnt scale at all.

The best explanation is:
Hurr, AMD have sucky drivers
Durr, Nvidias drivers are perfect

The driver argument is really blown out of proportion, there are problems with both sides. A lot of the problems with AMD drivers come from the preconception that BETA drivers are stable drivers, while Nvidia rarely releases WHQL-drivers leaving users having to run beta drivers.

On the plus side, I have seen a lot of reviews that show a overclocked 7970 keeping up/beating a 680. So maybe there's hope. It's just hard to figure out which one to go with.
