Good job cherry-picking a single result out of tons of them. Well done... unfortunately for your post, that is not representative of the bulk of the results.

Here, look at this:

hardocpskyrimaa.gif

This is weird. I did a test on skyrim, everything on max, and I never saw my fps under 60... O.o

skyrim_config.jpg

7970: (limited by vsync... tried to force it off through CCC, no luck):
TESV_2012_03_20_21_52_27_748.jpg

Driver problems maybe? This pic was taken with that damned tree in view... one of the biggest performance hits I know... and my fps is locked higher than the max achieved in the review.
EDIT: stock settings on my 7970

Yeah definitely. GK104 is a gamer GPU without a doubt. And has some compromises when it comes to compute. Mainly no HW scheduling.

But some of the absolutely huge differences we've seen come from DP perf, that's always crippled on GeForce cards.

E: add to that 680 being more crippled than the 580...

1) Kepler cores =/= Fermi cores
2) Kepler is limited at 1/24 of the DP precision whereas Fermi was limited to 1/8 of the DP precision. This is an intentional move by Nvidia to sell more Quadro/Tesla cards

Ohh hope that's true, and all the consumer geforce cards are capped to push the teslas and quadros.
This is a gaming card and that's clearly where the money is, so GPGPU is not going to hurt 99% of sales.

Maybe because the GTX 680 has 3x the CUDA cores but has been artificially crippled by 24x while the GTX 580 is crippled by 8x leveling things out -- 7970 is crippled by 4x. A Quadro or Tesla card based on Kepler should be very good business for nVidia. Lower power consuption while getting a lot of boost. Don't forget that the GK104 still has more transistors than GF100/110 through all of the bias rolleyes.gif

Ah, true on sound/temp then. However lightning isn't reference... and I thought it was msrp'ing notably higher than the ref 7970's ($600+?).

Lol, are you seriously telling me that you expected a shizload of overclocking power from a card that has already been overclocked 300MHz. Sure 1,006MHz is the new stock clock, but it WAS 706MHz... that is what these GPU's were originally intended for. So I think 1275MHz on stock volts is pretty damn impressive. There's even more room for it with voltage increases. So I believe your point is now a moot one.
