You're right about OCN users overclocking their cards, but what about the rest of the market? Are they all OCN types too? Obviously these cards are aimed at gaming enthusiasts, but how many of them are overclockers? I know one guy who has a 580 (to play World of Warcraft!!!!), and never even tried to OC it.
One point I'd like to mention is this. Just like Intel, I think AMD and nVidia are sandbagging when it comes to overclocking; I think they are deliberately allowing a margin of comfort with their chosen clock speeds, giving the impression that this chip or that is " a good overclocker".

I'm not really concerned with what the general public does with their cards, only what we overclockers do. There's nothing wrong with those people not overclocking though.

Now that the 680's actually exist...I'm kinda sad. I got so fed up I just went ahead and bought a 7970. Guess it'll be another few generations before I go Nvidia again.

Either way, the 680 seems to be a very good card. Props to Nvidia, but if rumors are anything to go on, and the 780 will still be a first-gen Kepler card, it will be interesting to see how it matches up with a refined Tahiti.

I would have buyers remorse, but as I'm on a single monitor setup my 7970 pumps out about 100 FPS in BF3 so I can hardly say I need more overkill. Of course, I could always sell my 7970 and jump over to a 680. I still have my old 4870's lying around to hold me over until one's in stock....hmmm, tempting to be sure.

I went a similar upgrade path (7970s to 680s) and the 680 is 7-9% faster in some games (skyrim, batman) and slower in others (metro 2033, crysis 2, a few others). I wouldn't sweat it too much, they're both killer cards. 680s aren't a real upgrade though if you're oc'ing. If anything i'd rather wait for the GK112 which will be a real upgrade, the 680 is pretty much a sidegrade from the 7970 esp. if you're overclocking.

Anyone upgrading from a 7970 to a 680 is a fool in my eyes. Even if you are totally convinced the 680 is 5% faster overall there is still no point. Have finally been on a machine with a 680 recently I can safely say there is no discernable difference with performance between the two. My friend who has one actually has a slightly better CPU then me as well. (2600k)

Although I can't really talk because I am actually thinking about downgrading myself right now.

I wouldn't upgrade from a radeon 7970 to a gtx 680 if you aren't having driver issues, as 10% even isn't that noticeable in games, unless you could return the radeon outright for a full refund and just save yourself $50 + get the (slightly) faster card. However, they're both ridiculously fast, no question. I just take issue with the FUD flying around. For anyone buying *NOW*, the choice is abundantly clear that the gtx 680 is a better choice, for the reasons I and others have already stated a million times previously.

Good grief GT. Quite the # of posts going in this thread, fighting the good fight as always I see thumb.gif Anyway, 680 is a better buy for a new purchaser. Pretty dumb for any 7970 user to switch, though, because they're mostly equal when oc'ed.... but I like new and shiny so whatever.
