Aps Help Me Build a HTPC

Thread Starter
Hello everyone. Like some others I too have been stalking this part of the forum and want to build an HTPC.

The reason is I have DirecTV now but am migrating to Xfinity from Comcast. The whole reason is Internet. The Bundle deals just help reduce cost on the whole, I am actually pretty happy with DirecTV.

I need to replace 2 HD DVR's in the end. I am open for suggestions for a single server system (which I don't know how to do) or 2 HTPC's for each TV (current plan).

Has to be Wife friendly tongue.gif (the biggest hurdle)

So currently I have an Intel E7200 and an AMD Athlon X2 6000 left over from old builds.
I was thinking of doing an Intel build with an HD5450 with a G41 Motherboard.
Plan is to use a Hauppeauge 2250 or a Hauppauge Colossus - Please give input smile.gif Other device?
Wireless N Dongle for network
Win7 Media Center
Has to be able to record HD Channels and watch HD channels at the same time (wife requirement)

Memory - case - and devices I'll just go for best price at the moment then update remotes as needed.
Sound I am happy with onboard, I just use the TV speakers.
Cost is a factor but I plan on doing the build over a couple of months, first 1 build, then the 2nd later on.
Gaming is not a factor I won't do any real gaming on these machines, so focus is more on power consumption, and cost.

What PSU should I need for an Intel E7200 + 2 gigs Ram + 1 terrabyte hdd + HD5450 + devices?
The motherboard does have Intel x4500 graphics - should I use just onboard and skip the HD5450?

Thanks all

Is there a way to use 1 computer to record and then stream to separate tv's?
Anyone have any knowledge of this?

Most likely you will be using Windows Media Center to do the recording in the main PC, then you would need a device at each TV to stream to. You could use a HTPC or something like the Xbox 360 as a Media Center Extender.

I recommend the Ceton Infinitv CableCard tuner to do the recording, you'll need to rent a CableCard from Comcast.

Don't think there's a way around devices for each TV. I don't know if Windows Media Center recordings could be used with a DNLA server so DNLA/SMART TVs could watch it directly. This might be something to look into if your TVs can do that and skip adding devices.

Thanks.

I will take a look at the Ceton. I only have 2 tv's to access so I guess if I could have 1 primary system do all the recording and then be accessible on the network, then use a simple system on the other tv to access the recordings that would be what I am looking for.

I don't quite understand the cablecards though, can I use 1 tuner and run it to both tv's? So I only need one htpc to do the recordings.

The ceton is 4 tuners and uses 1 cable card. You can set it up to have it use 2 tuners on the PC its installed on and then 2 to a seperate PC or media extender - this is how I have it setup but you can have it do any combination you like using the 4 tuners with up to 4 pcs/extenders with 1 tuner each.

Ok I dont have an Xbox.
I need an extender? Which currently is only on Xbox or discontinued tech from 2008.

So basically to get live tv to the 2nd tv I need an xbox... Wife won't like that one bit tongue.gif

I keep reading and it looks like the simplest solution would be to have 2 HTPC's with tuner cards and run individual lines to each.

Know anything about the Slingbox? This looks like a possible option but then I still need a pc for the 2nd tv as it is dumb.
I am confused if the slingbox sends everything over the internet or if it also can use the home wifi.

It doesn't look that easy to setup the more I get into it.

You only need 1 tuner card with one line running to it. it can send live tv to any HTPC or extender.

What do I need on the other HTPC to receive the signal? I think this is where I am lost since it is on a different floor in a different room.
Best method for me is over the N network. Or do I need to run cables? Like a splitter?

The only thing you need is for the other HTPC to be connected to the home group. WHen you go to install the ceton card theres extra network software you need to install as well. Once you have your Host HTPC installed and setup youll want to install the ceton network software on the client HTPC.
