Looking to Upgrade

Thread Starter
Well right now I am a bit torn between AMD and Intel although my old build was AMD, which i purchased in 2006 and I haven't had any problems with it.

PSU : 500 Watt nytex
CPU : AMD athlon x2 64 4800+
GPU: EVGA 8600 GTS
Memory: 2 GB ddr2 (not sure of speeds)

It was a pre-built so the motherboard is questionable...

I'm currently looking to get a FX-6100 although I've been hearing that the FX series isn't much of an improvement from Phenom. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light if there is any truth to this.

My budget is around $800 to $1100, some of the part's i'm currently looking at:

(i reside in canada so I know newegg has different stock compared to the US site)

Case : http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139011
PSU : http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139016
HDD : http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136794
GPU : http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127594
FAN: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835106150
Memory : http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233144
CPU : http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103962
MOBO : gigabyte / asus - undecided

I was thinking of have 3 HDDs, two being for RAID 1 for data along with a smaller HDD for operating systems / programs. Although after looking at some of the prices it seems unlikely. I went with that HDD as it has a 5 year warranty, not sure what the blue/green/black stands for though.

I think the fan might be overkill, I'm not sure what to get or if the stock fan is good enough or if it will even fit in the case. I might overclock depending on what CPU I get and just to keep the CPU cooler I thought I'd throw it in as it's only $50. I also never have never installed a CPU before so I'm not sure about thermal paste application, fan installation, etc... I think the stock fan has it already applied to it?

The GPU, I picked the 560 ti as (from benchmarks I've seen) it seems to run most games at a good framerate. I'd be running games at 1680x1050 unless I end up buying a new monitor but I doubt it. Not sure if I should wait for the mid range 600 series or not, but i'm not sure what the performance hit would be of using PCI 3.0 with PCI 2.0, if I do end up getting AMD. As far as I know AM3+ can't support PCI 3.0 so I won't be waiting for AMD's next socket.

I went with 2 sticks of memory instead of 4, not sure what the benefits are of either, just in case I want to upgrade the memory to 16 gb in the future.

I'm looking at ASUS and Gigabyte motherboards, slightly leaning towards gigabyte. I know a few friends have them and they seem to be good. Not entirely sure which one to get, it seems some require a BIOS update, to work with the FX series. I don't have an extra CPU to throw in to do the update so if I do go with FX I would want the BIOS to accept it. Any suggestions on what I should get? I'm not sure about features, but as long as it doesn't have 3 PCI-E slots, it seems most mobo's do which I think is a bit overkill for what I need.

I have a linksys wireless network card (http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WMP300N/) that I'm not to fond of that uses a PCI slot, so I'd either use that or get a new one if my budget permits. I've heard intel wireless network cards are pretty good but expensive, I haven't really researched this though.

The only difference I see with the FX-6100 and FX-6200 is a higher stock clock speed and a higher Watt usage, so I went with the former. I do some gaming and programming, it'd be nice to have some power just to experiment with some things but I doubt I will need anything that powerful. I've heard the FX-8100 only has 4 FPU's split among the 8 cores so I'm not sure what kind of limitations this CPU has that might affect performance if I ever want to use all the cores.

I'd appreciate any help I can get.

with that budget and using some of your components (assuming they are still worth it), just wait for ivy.

follow this thread . . .

you could, with that budget,
get 2x1TB hdd's for about $220
AMD Phenom II 960T-$125
Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P rev. 3.1-$55
get a 120GB SSD such as the Agility 3-$135
7870-$255
2x4GB DDR3 1600 MHz Kingston HyperX Blu-$44
Coolmax 750B PSU-$60
that totals $994
do you need a case?

what are you using the computer for primarly?
Looks like you have a good idea of what you want and the knowledge of the parts so go for it. Thats the best advice I can give you. I've seen many of these threads and Im surprised you haven't been hit with 100 replies telling you to go 2500k.

Theres lots of rumors from both camps on these, Ive only used the FX at a friends place and it ran very simular to my 1100T in performance. With that said it was fast, I've seen alot of happy 6100fx owners here so I would maybe goto the owners forum and ask them what they think. Your going to get alot of people here that haven't used the tech telling you different. If I listened to all the poeple here I wouldnt have bought my otther system AMD 3870K APU and that system is awsome for $500, it runs erverything smooth as butter.

So go with your own ideas, with a 560 TI, your not going to have any issues running games regardless of what CPU you use.

Everything still works but I don't think anything would be reusable. I think something is wrong with the fan in the PSU as it started making a pulsing sound, it's still taking in air so I'm not entirely sure what's causing the noise. The case only has one exhaust fan so I probably won't be reusing it as well. All the other parts except for the 8600 GTS I would need new, it still uses IDE for DVD drives and HDD.

@ phillyd
Thanks for the suggestion! Although instead of spending near $350 on hard drives I would rather put that money into a better motherboard / CPU, as well as a case. I think that's just too much for the benefits I'd get out of it.

@ truckerguy
If anything this upgrade is primarily to be able to play newer games. The 6 cores appeals to me as I do some virtual machine work which is terrible on my current setup. I don't do a lot of CPU heavy and time consuming tasks, such as video encoding, very often so I don't need that much power.

Thanks, I'll go see what some owners think of it.

well best bang for your buck would be to go with the FM1 line as you dont sound like your a hard core gamer the FM1 line is a cpu and gpu in one called a apu they can be crossfired and for alot less moneyI know Bravo will back what Im telling you as he has one and is a hard core gammer was impressed with thier performace and you will be able to run all the new games on high settings not max setting but high and I belive it will be the way of the future as AMD is doing more R and D in that direction

mobo-http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131784,,130.00
apu-http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819106002,,120.00
apu cooler- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233011,,,42.00
gpu- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127612,,,70.00
ssd -http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226236,,,130.00 load just os and needed program on it make for a fast rig
ram- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231461,,,50.00
psu- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371016,, 65.00 I know its alot of power but I like it that way dosent have to work as hard and i.e last longer

so out the door 490.00 10 dollar rebate and a 10 dollar gift card to use on another item thats 470 I dident pick a case or optic drive they are more a personal tast thing but a soild balanced rig

Well it depends really on the game, I don't play games often but I do tend to play a lot of games. You've peaked my interest though, I've tried looking at some benchmarks for the A8-3870k (seeing it's only $20 more why not?) although it seems they are all using Nvidia video cards which seems a bit silly. Although I'd prefer a Nvidia card as Nvidia's drivers for linux are a bit more stable I find, I might be willing to sacrifice it depending on how well it would work with crossfire.

It seems FM2 is suppose to come out in a few months, I might just be willing to wait and see what that brings along with Ivy bridge.

Seems there are some benchmarks already out: http://www.overclock.net/t/1232099/fud-amd-a10-5800k-benches-are-out

The new LLanos are gonna suckify..BD-based thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif AMD is determined to force BD on people..They keep this up..they will
be in big trouble.Maybe already are ..with the 680 being better and cheaper than the 7970.No more Thuban production..These guys
are determined to shoot themselves in the foot..Someone over there is ruining what once was a good thing.960T is a good cpu.
I'd bet mine will outdo any fx6100 in just about everything..hands down.Stars-core llanos are the ones to get.
