PSU Troubles

Thread Starter
So I've noticed that my gaming/folding rig has been shutting itself off the past couple of days and did so once last night while playing LOL mad.gif. After the game it shut off again about 45 minutes later.

In an effort to figure out what was going on, I open her up with the expectation that I am shorting something. To my surprise, nothing was shorted, but the PSU was extremely hot. Whilst in this state of being over heated, my system would not boot, but as soon as it cooled down, everything was back to normal.

Questions to be answered: What can cause acute PSU overheating (PSU is 3 years old and didn't overheat in previous poorly vented cases) and is this thing dying on me? The PSU in question is in my sig (XON-1100P14HE 1100W) and after seeing the recommended PSUs of OCN fear the one I have may not be all that great rolleyes.gif. Would it be worth just getting another PSU now to save the trouble?

Other System Specs:

MoBo: Asrock Extreme 7 Gen 3
CPU: 2500k @ 4.5GHz, 1.38V
Ram: 8GB Corsair vengeance @ 1600(XMP)
GPU's: GTX260sp216 65nm + GTX260sp216 55nm SLI'd @ 680core, linked shader(forget value), 1150 ram + 9600GSO stock
HDDS: 2xOCZ Agility 3's 120GB + Caviar Green1TB
DVD: LiteOn sata drive

If more info is needed, I will be happy to provide it. Thanks in advance for the help thumb.gif.

EDIT: I'm planning on upgrading GFX cards soon as well. Maybe to GTX680 depending on how they fold, but whatever I get I will run SLI (bit of a fanboy yes, but I fold so its ok redface.gif). If not 680's then maybe 560ti's or 580's, dunno yet.

If the shutdowns persist, I'd bet it's the PSU. I've had that happen before, replaced it, no more shutdowns.

Actually when I bought a new PSU to replace the Xigmatek I had, I HOPED it was the PSU, cause if the shutdown's persisted, I'd have no idea.. but it was the PSU.

Get a 850w, should cover all of you're future endeavors, or a Capstone 750 That'd handle SLI 680's fine. Personally will be SLI 580's on my 750w this weekend.

It could be a lot of different things causing overheating. Is it dusty or the fan not working? Are you sure it's really operating hotter than it was before? It's somewhat likely that it has overtemperature protection and the thing is shutting itself off when temps go too high, which could explain random shutdowns and not booting until it gets cooler.

Considering the age and everything else, I'd just grab a Capstone 750W since $88 is a pretty crazy price for that.

Haven't had a chance to rip it apart yet, but from a preliminary check, the fan seems to be working as I could feel air moving from it when I got it back up and running. It was definitely hotter than I have ever known it to be. I could only hold my hand on it for around 3 second before I had to pull it off. I've never known any PSU to get that hot.

I've opened the case and dropped the ambient temp and all seems to have been well; it was still on while at work all day and made it through the night. Going to look into the Capstone in case it takes a dump on me though.

Thanks for the wisdom guys. thumb.gif

Edit: I just remember the connector for one of my gfx cards wasn't fully seated (was going to bed when I opened the case) and I took care of that when I noticed it. Could that have factored into this?
