Flash or AE?

Right now I am trying to start up my web design business with a good looking website. I'm looking to make an animation, possibly with sound, where 3D text comes crashing down and makes a big impression for the viewer.

I'm wondering if this type of thing would be done in Flash or After Effects. I own Flash Profession CS3 & currently am on a 30-day trial for AE CS5.5, so I've got some programs I can work with. I've done some research and own a few animation books but cannot find anything that suggests how to animate text in this way.

I would like the animation to be somewhat similar to the text falling on this website http://www.sqcircle.com/

If someone could please recommend a starting point or a book this would be helpful. Thanks!

For me personally, I would go with After Effects, but then I don't like Flash so it may be one sided.

I say this because the 3D element within AE is actually pretty decent and would allow you to give it a good perception of depth within the piece, plus there are tons of plugins for AE available which can take out a lot of the work. AE for me is a lot easier to used as well, is more powerful and simply produces a higher quality product if you know how to use it. They are both pretty different in capabilities but I would say with the looming demise of Flash, get into some strong video and animation based skill sets with AE as the demand for video is on the rise thanks to YouTube.

I do have a qualm however and that is, are you going for a full Flash site similar to the link you posted? If so, I would recommend staying away from it as the reasons to have it are heavily outweighed by reasons for not. Below are a few of those reasons:

  • Bounce rate is much higher for full Flash sites
  • Support for mobile platforms (Apple products)
  • Download times for slower connections
  • SEO properties (very important)

We at our company stopped using Flash a while back and now have a Media Services team focusing on AE, PP and Maya.

Hope this helps and good luck!

I do plan on making my site with HTML and not Flash... I have heard this about Flash sites and I don't ever plan on using it for websites. Thanks for the advice!
