Should I overclock?

Thread Starter
So I haven't ever overclocked my system (I have overclocked my previous build but not this one) because I thought that I was good with what I had. So lately I have been thinking if I should overclock.

I am mainly a gamer so my main concern is if I'll have any performance increase in gaming but I also use this pc for compiling code because I'm a programmer and I also wanted to know if I'll have any increase in everyday use (even in shutdown and startup).

So should I overclock or not?

EDIT: My Rig http://www.overclock.net/lists/display/view/id/4078177

EDIT2: On another note I have already overclocked my GPU as far as it could go, so I'm looking for overclocking the rest of my system

You don't have your system specs listed, please fill our your rig details ("add rig") in your profile so we can see what you're working with.

Ah, must just be taking a bit before it shows up in your sig then.

Anyway, nice rig you got there smile.gif
Do you NEED to...well probably not, but I wouldn't be able to help myself tongue.gif

You'll prob be able to get a pretty decent clock w/ that HSF, but you'll probably want something a bit beefier once you start pushing it.

Yeah I was thinking for not the kind of extreme overclock just something to make a bit of a difference in my life tongue.gif but most importantly I was considering games even though they don't max out my CPU they bring it a bit close to max (games like BF3) that's why I was considering because yea you know more FPS = profit tongue.gif

Does Bear Grylis **** in the woods? I don't see why you wouldn't! Why get a 2500K and NOT overclock it? A better heatsink would help, but Yours will be fine for a decent OC. thumb.gif

Just try changing the multiplier to 40 and see how it affects gaming or compiling. That's a substantially larger jump than, say, 4.0 to 4.5, and the jump to 4.0 requires no work. If that's not discernible, then I doubt taking it to 4.5 would be noticeable. Speeds above 4.5 are mainly for fun smile.gif, though I imagine SOME people can make use of them.

Since you're a gamer there's no reason not to overclock. With the rig you have should not run anything stock

YES

4.8GHz was very easy for my Rig. Anything under should be fairly easy and shouldn't require a ton of voltage. I let my step down the GHz when I'm just browsing the web or watching a movie. It's only at 4.8GHz when gaming.

When I chose to buy it, I bought specifically for overclocking but only when I would need it because i didn't want to decrease the lifetime of the CPU and now yeah I'll probably try it

Yea I'll try something like that
