680GTX only 4 VRM's? cough *570gtx all over again*

Thread Starter
570gtx used less watts and still blew up on 4 VRM's...

I should know, I've burned 2x 570gtx myself (thank god for EVGA's outstanding warranty..)

So how is the 680gtx supposed to keep the same number of VRM's from blowing up while using MORE power..
I hope I'm wrong, otherwise I'm waiting on the Lightning version.

Discuss.

It's a rather efficient chip, so they probably won't be an issue. It only looks to be a problem under extreme overclocking.

doubt it uses more power, and as for extreme condition (ln2 and what not) will be more of a non-ref card thing

It's one of the reasons why I wouldn't necessarily jump on board on day one with a reference design. My non-reference MSI 570 has two additional power phases...and two quieter fans...and other features that trounce the reference design. I'm looking forward to see enhanced versions of the card...and at lower prices. wink.gif

It should not be a problem because it uses much less power.

But if you must have more then wait for the 5,8, and 14 power phase versions that EVGA has coming out.

How can 680 use MORE power if it is rated at 195W? 570 had what, 220W TDP?

Rated TDP? What's that? [/sarcasm]

Tweaktown pits it as using more watts than the 570

I think that the real answer here is what it is pretty much always - Jump early and you get to try out the good stuff first and be the envy of us all...while also running the risk of slamming into a wall of issues.

There appear to be quite a few brave folks buying the reference card now. Within a couple of months the stock will even out and prices will dip...and by then, we will have real world experience from those early adopters...including whether or not the VRMs, drivers, fans, etc have issues. Me? I can wait. wink.gif
