Enabling AHCI mode AFTER Windows 7 Installation

Is there any difference installing Windows 7 in AHCI mode or changing it after the install which is my case. Wondering if there will be better performance installing it in AHCI, or it doesn't matter because you can change it later.
Another thing can the change mess up any drivers? Wondering because my soundcard behaved strange cutting off sound and sending a loud tone.
After I reinstalled the drivers that problem went away.
Is there any other drivers I should be concerned of and reinstall by suspecting the change to AHCI mode have corrupted some drivers.

I know from experience if Windows 7 is installed on IDE and the later in BIOS AHCI is chosen, Windows 7 will boot and install but it leads to a whole host of problems. In other words to use AHCI and for it to work smoothly you need to have the option selected in BIOS prior to installing. This is from my own personal experience so any gurus please chime in.
