[Build Log] 650 Dominator [3770k, GTX 680 SLi]

650 Dominator

Goal: To build a superior rig to the current i5 Lynnfield setup currently powering my gaming needs. I would like to overclock to the limits, possibly water cool if I was to get some help (posting in Water Cooling with little respond so far), and post benchmarks for the curious.

Qualms: Going i7 2600k. I don't know why - I could have done a 3930k or waited for Ivy Bridge. With the GTX 680s and PCI-E 3, I'm not sure I'm doing the right thing. Can always upgrade and sell soon. Ended up going 3770k and Z77 Sabertooth.

Budget: I think within reason is the best thing to say here. My guess is between $3500-$4000 including everything from the case to the custom WC loops to the 27" monitor I am seeking out.

Specs

Let's start it off with aesthetics. I'm really excited as this is my first power house since 2006 when the E6600 came out.
  • Case - Corsair 650D - $122
  • PSU - Corsair HX850 - $110
  • Mobo - ASUS Sabertooth Z77 - $210
  • CPU - i7 3770k - $300
  • Memory - 2x8GB Crucial Balistix 8-8-8-24 @ DDR3 1600 - $150
  • GPU1 - eVGA GTX 680 - $510
  • GPU2 - eVGA GTX 680 - $510
  • CPU Cooler - CM Hyper Evo+ - $35
  • SSD - 2 x Samsung 830 256GB RAID0 - $620

Total Price Paid: $2,567 so far.

Monitor

I am currently trying to decide which monitor to go for. It's up in the air, but the Samsung S27A950D is currently at the top of my list. But I'm still not sure if I want a 23" or a 27" monitor. but I want a freaking Dell U3011. Still haven't bought anything yet. Gah!

Keyboard/Mouse

I currently have a Logitech G15 and a G500 kb/mouse combo. Thinking of going Das Keyboard and a Sensei to top it all off. My Seinheisser HD555 have lasted me an extremely long time but the cable connecting the headphones to the wire came open. I could probably tape it, but I think I might get a new set, so not sure if I should get the same ones or go something different.

Update: I now own a full SteelSeries set (7H, 7G, QcK+, and Sensei), and a DasKeyboard Ultimate.

Cooling

As far as mods, currently I'm thinking to stay air cooling. The only reason is that II may or may not be going to a LAN center infrequently and don't want to chug water around. I would love to get a custom loop going if I can get some help picking out the CPU block, GPU blocks, res, pumps, rads, fittings, barbs, etc. I kind of would like to do a plan before I get this done. Maybe I can get it done in a visio or photoshop in tutorial format for the 650D.

Sound card

Let's see, I also have X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty for a sound card. So far, so good...

Conclusion

Feel free to let me have it about any of this stuff.

Looks like an awesome build.. thumb.gif

As a side note, those headphones are awesome, why replace them when you should be able to get a replacement cord from sennheiser for a couple $$ I had a pair of HD570 for years and went through 2 cords before they finally gave up the ghost.

Thanks for the heads up. I will contact Seinheisser and check in to this. I do LOVE them... been absolutely wonderful.

I think since I did buy the 680s that I should have waited, but I thought, "what the hell?" Ivy will have a 10-15% performance increase and the price tag is going to be horrendous. I think the 2600k will last a long time and when the time does come, I will gladly part out and go Ivy. I think the bench marks for this machine will be pretty good. Also contemplating water cooling.

I fixed the sound "car" smile.gif

edit: about the water cooling, anyone have any opinions about the H100? Should I do that to go the easy route? Or should I actually liquid cool everything? I can probably spend about $300 on water cooling components if that will fit the bill for gpu blocks (any for the 680 yet?) and of course the cpu block, rad, etc etc.

edit 2: reading through this post http://www.overclock.net/t/982313/corsair-obisidian-650d-water-cooled-build-log/0_20 ... really digging the setup.

Youre right about the performance, from what Ive heard, but I think you are wrong about the price. The new ivy bridges are supposed to fill the price points as their sandy bridge counterparts:

Also, about the watercooling, a setup like the one in the worklog listed is going to be a lot more than 300. The rads, 680 block, CPU block, and pump alone will probobly get you to the 300 mark. Not to mention the res (over $100), the tubing (20-30) , the fittings (50-100) etc.

I got the 2700k 2600k for $202 with a combo I purchased. Thought that price was pretty good. As for the water cooling, I cross posted in water cooling and I got the same response about the $300. And then the same about $600. So I said **** it, let's just get a list of parts together and I'll get it done.

There's nothing stopping this rig from being amazing. I was about to buy a 3930k but what the hell, $200 for this 2700k wasn't bad....
