Using GPU's for processing tasks.

Thread Starter
Okay, long story short, I am constantly maxing out my i7 with parallel running tasks.

My GPU's? They idle at 0%.

How can I take advantage of this processing power for parallel processing tasks? Is this type of computing dependent on the program? Do GPU manufacturers have some kind of bridge?

Is this even possible?

Nvidia cards have cuda which can be used for certain things. Not so sure about ATI.

You should be folding on those cards.

It's when you connect your computer to like an online network, and the network sends your computer calculations to do for medical research and such.

It's also a competition wink.gif

Edit: also I read something about AMD doing this with their APU's using the cpu as a decoder and the GPU as a processor for floating point operations or something

Okay but I actually need my gpu's to run silently - which sorta puts folding out of the question...

What about open gl/cl?

Computing with the GPU is program dependent the last I checked. So unless the program is coded to make use of the hardware your not going to make it. There's really certain areas that it works out to being worth while and honestly you're probably not going to be doing many of them (IE, hacking, specific financial programs, modeling programs, simulation programs, etc).

What exactly are your parallel tasks?

Audio processing.

Basically I will have around 100 pieces of audio that need to be rendered and then processed with effects.

So at any given time I will have ~250 different processes being run. 4core/8thread cant really keep up like a stream processor with hundreds of cores could.

I don't understand how you expect to be able to work with the GPU except "...I actually need my gpu's to run silently".

You can't offload the work from any given program to the GPU, however some programs can work using the GPU.

Personally I use Badaboom for video conversion and that's about it.
