There will never be quad 690 unless they re-write the drivers completely. Drivers only support FOUR GPUs, and a 690 = TWO GPU on one card. Thus TWO in SLI is FOUR GPUs.

I can't see why this wont be possible, 10 years ago it was unheard of too sli two cards then a few years later we had the capability for 4 GPU's, can't see why beyong 4 GPU's wont be possible in the near future, just give it time

this board has everything i am looking for. a such high performance sas controller is wonderfull to have for my ssd disks http://thessdreview.com/our-reviews/sata-3/lsi-sas-9207-8i-pcie-3-0-host-bus-adapter-quick-preview/5/ without the need of a raid card the pci-e lines can be used for other things such as multiple graphic cards. 4x cfx/sli is pointless since the 4:th gpu won't add much real performance. amd cards typically performs horrible with 2 gpu:s(mikrostuttering) but good with 3 gpu:s while nvidia scales well upp to 2 gpu:s, still the 4:th pci-e x16 slot might be usefull for other purposes.

another sulution for me would be to get a cheaper mobo and invest in a good quality raid card instead, it's all about how much it will cost. i am willing to spend up to ~$600 for this board. there need to be watercooling parts for the mobo also.

You must have not seen the part with a SRP of $1099. As for your GPU comments they are completely outdated and don't apply anymore.

you can have more than 4 gpus, it's just you can't run them in sli. . .

if the 690 had 2 external sli connectors rewriting the drives would work, since it's a hardware problem, i doubt we'll see more than 4 gpus in sli or crossfire in the next few gens, past that all bets are off, it's too hard to predict what'll happen tomorrow, let alone a few years from now

though there is a trend towards more and more shared work load in computers thanks to how more and more computer have multi-core cpus, and we're starting to see more and more multi-gpu/video card setups.

that's the problem to get far enough into that segment of the market more people need to buy into it, but more people won't buy into it till it's bulletproof. . .

the problem with >2 gtx680 seams to be cpu limitation. 2 way CF don't perform well at the 6000 series http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-geforce-stutter-crossfire,2995-7.html or the 7000 series. i can't find any test with hd 7970 in 3 way CF. if i get a 2160*3840 monitor i will need powerfull gpu:s.
