At least CoD fans aren't blowing this out of proportion like Mass Effect 3 fans.

Bah, both pale in comparison to the uproar from the Halo 2 ending.
Death threats were way too common back then.

I think it'd be fair to say without the PC Call of Duty would not exist as it does today especially when you consider all the early console CoD games were crap and sold accordingly. Funny how much things have changed. I remember being literally blown away by the first CoD on PC. 9700 Pro was really the first card to blow my socks off. Far Cry, CoD Half-Life 2 all looked so amazing on it.

Yes, the console-only COD3 is, without question, the worst title in the series.

COD, UO, and COD2 on the PC were by some measure the best in the series. They supported extensive modding and custom maps...and the modding community thrived. Servers running UO and COD2 were up and running for 5 and 6 years after release, with tens of thousands of folks still online. Custom maps, weapons mods, user-developed game types (freeze tag anyone?). I have played every COD title on the PC extensively (4 or 5 days a week since the original...much to my wife's frustration)...and look back wistfully at the UO and COD2 days. They really were the golden age of COD...and late adopters have no idea what has been lost in this shift to lowest common (console) denominator..

While COD4 was revolutionary, it's ranking system pretty much screwed over custom maps and mods. Yeah, they were developed, but it was nothing like the UO and COD2 days. Now it's just the same one or two dozen maps over and over for a year until the next minor evolution of the franchise comes along. WAW, MW2, BO, MW3...all just minor evolutions of the same console port designed with almost no support for mods...and designed from that start to motivate you to buy DLC and then throw the game away each November for the new release.

Oh well, at least we still have the option of playing on the PC I suppose. It could be worse. I can't stand consoles. The input mechanism sucks for FPS gaming...and the first config that I do with any game is turn off in-game chat. My gaming group uses Ventrilo...while others use Teamspeak. We have that flexibility on the PC. We can also use Fraps, multi-monitors, a wide range of input devices, etc.

I think that the real answer is that publishers like consoles because they only need to coordinate with two hardware vendors (Sony and MS), which greatly facilitates designing for compatibility and including anti-piracy features...at the expense of performance and flexibility.

BTW, if you want to read even more of my boring thoughts on this topic, check out my review of MW3 on Amazon. It's still on top of the pile...probably to IW's annoyance. smile.gif

Okay apology accepted. Now do something about it?

The lack of XP weekends or special events is not the problem, the problem is all the hacking that takes place. I liked COD4 with punkbuster and it would autokick anyone who was hacking, 99% of the time. Now it's a hacking fest, more than 50% of the ground war games has a hacker. Sometimes there will be fights on who is the better hacker...

Scuba Steve I played CoD 2 and I also miss the days of modding, some great memories. I will forever regret my purchase of CoD 3

This just confirms the fact that developers are slaves to what the publisher wants.
You see it all the time. The devs are savvy about the PC and would like to fill the potential but the publisher is only concerned about where the extra dollar is.
