Help me help my wife decide!!

Thread Starter
Not to start a flame war, but which camera maker is better and why? Nikon or Canon?
My wife currently has a Nikon, but she says all the photographers use Canon. She cant decide on her next purchase. She has a Nikon D80 right now, and wants a camera that can not only shot singles but shot video as well. this though isnt a determining factor. If she cant get it she wont. Looking around the $1000 or less for body only.
Help please. Need to decide and buy this weekend.

um they are both about the same. where i live its very even between number of people shooting canon vs nikon. its honestly personal preference. the differences between the 2 exist but they are not extreme. if she knows more canon users then owning a canon would be smart because she can borrow and share equipment. but if she is comparing herself to random strangers that she probably will not become friends with anyway then it does not matter if she shoots canon or nikon. there are a lot more canon owners in here than nikon i think but that is not because canon is better by any means.

t2i for canon or d5100 for nikon would be the basic suggestion. if she already has a bunch of nikon lenses then i would suggest staying nikon since its easier than selling everything and starting new with canon.

Good advice thank you. Do you know how much better the d7000 is from the d5100? Its a little over limit, but if she can sell her d80 body for $150-200 then this would be reasonable.

With a d80, the rebel or d5100 would be a serious downgrade. Since she already shoots nikon get a d7000. Your wife needs to worry less about what other people shoot with cause many pros shoot medium format digital....only sports and reporters use 35mm.

i honestly am not very knowledgeable on nikon cameras. i have a friend that owns a D7000 and it is a nice camera. looking at the specs i do not see a huge significant improvement with the d7000 over the d5100. you can get an extra 2 fps in burst mode with the D7000. as far as video goes they both should be about even with each other unless she is producing a high budget professional video in which case i would suggest something different. otherwise. the D5100 would be a good solid camera and money saved buying it over a D7000 can be used for another lens.

if she goes nikon you can buy the camera body only and save a few dollars assuming she still has the kit lens (18-55) from her D80.

if you wait until later this afternoon there are more knowledgeable people here that can give advice as well as have more insight on nikon cameras

No idea what you mean about medium format and 35mm, but Looking and reading about the d7000 seems like its a big improvement from her current camera. Most likely this will be what I get her. Thanks for your advice.

better advice than mine like i said a lot more knowledgeable people here. i do fully agree with the debate over canon vs nikon. no need to buy one because everyone else has it.

If you can squeeze it into your budget, definitely go for the D7000 over the D5100. Their sensors are similar (or the same..) so image quality is close. The biggest thing that sets the D7000 apart is the handling and ergonomics of it. It has more buttons so you can quickly access features without having to dive into menus, 2 dials vs the 1 of the D5100, more FPS, a better viewfinder, the magnesium alloy body.

Choosing the D5100 would be an upgrade from your wife's D80 in terms of image quality, high ISO capability and it adds video. By that same token, it would be a downgrade in terms of handling (you lose the second dial, some short cut buttons, pentaprism viewfinder, the top LCD). After having two dials and a top LCD I would never go back to the entry level without top LCDs and single dials.

Coming from the D80 I would say definitely go for the D7000, unless she wants a smaller form factor.

If by this, you mean a whole bunch of sports and news photographers use Canon, its because half the time Canon gives them the camera to use for promotion/advertising.

um thats not even as much as thought even at the higher levels of journalism, im pretty sure its just the most common choice usually. i know for some sports illustrated shooters their kits are loaned to the by the company and they are canon kits but according to my friend who is a lighting assistant at SI and has one of these kits there is no special deal with canon. some SI shooters use nikon although not sure if its their personal gear or the companies.

btw its an awesome kit too. they gave him 2X 1Diii, 16-35, 24-70, 70-200, 300, and a 400. as well as lights and all the brackets needed to mount them in gyms and the remotes.
