Forget the violation of ToS its a violation of privacy. Facebook obviously doesnt care about your privacy with how its constantly in the news tracking and selling your info, they just cant be trusted. However at least this is some small good coming out of this. Law Enforcement and probably other govt already look at these sites and track info which is ripe for abuse as well. But having to actually give your password to schools and employers is absolutely ludicrous. All it does it make these social sites turn into a resume or people have a 2nd account for "business".

I used those social sites for a while mainly b/c of girls but I got rid of that stuff a while ago. The amount of risk to reward of having a ton of personal information on the net viewable by many people, not just the govt, and not just facebook lying about privacy, so you can "like this" is not worth it. People lose their jobs or chances at a school b/c they got drunk one day and posted something random or maybe got in a heated argument or wanted to vent. People vent all the time about their job and boss and do stupid things. But because you posted it online now all of a sudden your a bad person when EVERYONE does the same thing. Its absolutely ridiculous because people view these sites as SOCIAL MEDIA, as like they are talking with their friends, but its treated as a PROFESSIONAL environment when its not.

Social Media is just a huge problem. If you have it and use it your playing with fire. If you dont have one or deleted it then you are weird or hiding something. So you must have one and not use it just so you appear normal. I've heard of some employers automatically rejecting people who say they dont have a social media. Its pretty ridiculous. BUT IM GLAD I CAN UPDATE MY MOOD.

Don't hold your breath on lawsuits or defense... An employer can ask any questions that don't violate law. They can refuse to hire anyone as long as it's not based on a violation of law. You don't need to provide your acct. name/password and they don't need to hire you. It's that simple. There are no laws preventing an employer from asking.

The entire argument that employers should have access to an employees facebook page is complete Horse****. I don't use facebook, and it still infuriates me. On the other hand, who are the dumb people who leave drunk photos, idiot comments, and all the other BS open to the public? They make a private option for a reason, and then you can just tell Mr. CEO that you don't have a facebook page. Seems avoidable to me.

why is this a problem? For me it would never be because I wouldn't take a job that required me to share the info. In the long run it wouldn't be a workplace environment many people would want anyway. There is also changing the password later if you REALLY need the job or maybe just not posting anything stupid in the first place.

You sure about that?

I think it would improve the culture, as long as it was being used to vet people for a good culture. These things are used to help hiring managers avoid BAD employees, and there are TONS of bad employees who lie about their qualifications and float from job to job, costing organizations resources and time. Working with people like that in a real organization that is really trying to have a positive culture or goal is like sleeping with cancer.

The issue here is really unskilled workers with bad habits that aren't willing to learn, not so much businesses wanting into your personal life. At least that's how I see it right now. I feel a little uneasy defending a corporate practice like that which seems on the surface so obviously evil, but I've done the hiring and I can tell you that I'd jump at the chance to once over people's Facebook profiles along with a resume.

But would I draw the right conclusions?
