2x 7970 lightning or 2x gtx 680 foor 3x u2711 - Page 2

Not sure why people are still going on about VRAM. 2GB is enough for even 5760x1080 (3x 1080p monitors).

Proof:
http://hardocp.com/article/2012/03/22/nvidia_kepler_gpu_geforce_gtx_680_video_card_review/10

Deus Ex is the only game (out of the 5 they tested) that the 7970 scored higher with 5760x1080. Even in the VRAM hog known as BF3 is handling 5760x1080 like a champ. I only linked 1 of the tests, feel free to check the other 4.

7680x1440

that is a MAD resolution.

I don't think any current GPU's can push that much resolution on Ultra settings with AA.

That would be great proof, if he were playing at that low a res.

I placed an order for a 7970 Lightning from Amazon today. I couldn't get over how cool the lights lit up and showed overall GPU usage.

Yes, it is a bit more expensive than the 680. However it is important to remember that both cards when OC'd perform REALLY SIMILARLY. Since you're getting the cards, I'm assuming you're putting a bit of OC on them.

R7970 Lightning OC Review: http://vr-zone.com/articles/msi-r7970-lightning-review/15270-5.html

GTX 680 OC Review: http://vr-zone.com/articles/asus-gtx-680-2gb-overclocking-review-win-some-lose-some/15322-6.html

You'll notice that the GTX 680 will edge out the 7970 in a couple more games BUT its all within a the error of margin. What I mean is it really depends on the card that you get and how well it will overclock. Case and point. Look at 3Dmark11 under regular and OC conditions.

385

You'll notice that the OC'd 7970 is quite a bit above the stock 680 but falls just a hair short of the OC'd 680. If you push it to 1300mhz, which some Lightnings have been proven to be able to do that, it'll probably beat the 680.

IMHO, what made me go 7970 lightning was the cooler. The lightning cooler is a **** ton better than the stock GTX 680 cooler. While it is true that the 680 runs fairly quiet and cool at stock, at OC it and you'll get temperatures in the 80s with a loud blower fan. Not to mention, I love the slick 7970 lightning lights. I didn't feel like waiting for the non reference 680's but I bet you they're going to be some good MSI and ASUS non reference 680's in the $550 range.

680 SLI seems a bit weaker than 7970 CFX but that's probably due to release drivers not on par with the slightly more mature 7970 drivers. Idealy, you can grab a 680 lightning when that comes out and you'll have the 4GB vram, insane cooler and all the bells and whistles. Then again, you'll have to wait 2-3 months for that and by then why not just pick up the GTX 685 - GK110 but that's a whole different issue.

On that resolution, definately 7970's for the added 1GB Vram. On BF3 on a single U2711 I use more than 2GB of VRAM
post #16 of 32
Also, since we're talking about BF3 specifically.

What skews the graphs is the 680's ability to auto boost to 1050/1100 core when you compare stock 680 with stock 7970. However when you compare max OC,you'll see it's again, all within the margin of how well the specific video card you get will OC.

EVGA is releasing a gtx 680 FTW edition with 4gbs of vram. If I were you I would definitely wait for those to hit the shelves and pick up a couple of those thumb.gif

Right... That's why I play at 2560x1440 with 3x GTX580's and highest I've seen is 1.45GB used in Crysis 2, and Battlefield 3 uses almost 1.5GB with all maxed out (Ultra + MSAAx4 + HBAO, if I lower to MSAAx2 it doesn't hit above 1.4GB). thumb.gif

2GB is plenty even at 2560x1440 for the next year at the very least. thumb.gif

With max AA? I have no AA and only use 1.5-1.6GB.

What? If you check the charts, 4-way SLI comes out ahead as the resolution is increased. Doesn't look like it's broke to me.
