Except that PCI-e 3.0 16x tests are consistently faster than PCI-e 3.0 8x. That would rule out benchmark error. The bottleneck might be much, but it is there, and it will increase with more powerful cards.

Thanks for finding and posting that info. Looks like I'll be hopping on an Ivy Bridge CPU asap to enable PCI-E x16 3.0 for my motherboard in SLI! I must be getting hampered by PCI-E 2.0 x8 for each card in SLI on GTX 680 x2 cards frown.gif.

The difference between 8x and 16x is not significant.
From a purely statistical analysis the difference between the 2 numbers can not be contributed to anything other than chance.

With that said, i do believe that the new higher end cards are on the edge of being PCI 2.0 bottle necked.

I wonder if PCI-e bandwidth limitations is the cause of micro-stutter being more prevalent in CF setups. The bridge only being in serial and 900MiB/s. Especially 4-way CF like you tried. Wonder how much lag there is going from one PCI-e lane to the lane splitter to the first card.

I always thought it interesting that the original crossfire had an external "Cross-fireX" side-port to help out the bandwidth yet they got rid of it. Either they thought the native PCI-E bandwidth was adequate or it was for cost savings reasons. I think the SLI parellel system is better.

The difference between PCI-e 3.0 8x and 16x isn't much, but the difference will grow with each new card.

Why starve the GPU anyways? What exactly do you gain by staying with PCI-e 3.0?

Sorry to revive an old thread, but my 680 is only running @ 2.0 x16 on my ASRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3. I thought this was only an issue with X79 boards?
