Watt/Amp Question

Thread Starter
Let's take the EVGA GTX-680

EVGA states "Requirements: Minimum of a 550 Watt power supply. (Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 38 Amps.)"

If I was to run Sli, would I have to double the Watts and Amp on that "Requirement" to run 2 cards?

Don't mean to ask what may seem like a dumb question to some, but I have no clue. Feed my mind please. smile.gif

No, they're just giving you a recommendation for the whole system without knowing what else you've got in there (what CPU, how much it's overclocked, how many hard drives, etc.) besides their video card, and then upping the amount some to give some leeway in case you have a power supply that claims more than it can really do.

Doubling that amount would be double-counting phantom power consumption of components you don't own.

If you want an idea of the power consumption of the card itself (the majority of which will be from +12V):
