What does one say in a gameplay commentary?

Thread Starter
I've been thinking of making one, however I do not know what to say. Moreover, I am not a native English speaker, and I have problem pronouncing many words, such as "three"(as in the number 3).

Also, do I speak during the game, or after I've finished recording it?

Although I hate Crytek, for their lack of support, I still love Crysis 2 MP, even if it's old.

I think it depends on what kind of gameplay commentary you're doing. If you are playing a game blindly/for the first time we want to see your genuine reactions to the events, so you should speak while recording. If you are doing some kind of tutorial or guide then maybe you can speak over it later so that you can more easily explain what is happening without having to play at the same time.

As to what to actually say... well most of the Let's Plays I've watched were games that weren't completely linear so the LPer would explain their thought process, or what they thought might happen, or just made some jokes/ funny comments etc. Though I've also seen LPs where the person is literally speaking about nearly completely random things the entire time (check out raocow on youtube, guy is crazy), so who knows.

If you have an accent... well that might be a deal breaker for some people and they might not watch, but others might find it amusing. Maybe you can try playing it up so it works to your advantage. Hope that helps.

You should do whatever that you feel comfortable at the same time entertaining to the viewers that you want to capture. For me, I like watching Elpresador biggrin.gif, i just love his energy that he puts out. I could care less about someone with a really high KDR, camping, and shooting, blah blah. If you have an accent, i think that's ok, best to do a couple of trial runs at first and gauge at the results and then change a little.

There's no successful formula, again, just do what you feel comfortable and entertaining. thumb.gif

Just don't say, "Um" between every sentence. I watched a commentary earlier where the person did that and not only was it slightly annoying, but people ripped him up in the comments about it. wink.gif

DONT TALK ABOUT THE GAME MUCH, Its boring. People want to here about your life, what happening, your opinion on things
post #6 of 8
I'm going to be starting up a channel, and I've decided that I'm going to take something topical and give my opinion on the matter over the gameplay. It makes it a little more interesting. If you have an interesting life, talk about that too.

Basically, talk REALLY fast about every tiny thing. Then make sure to point out every mistake the player makes, and how they could be better. As a commentator, you clearly have far more skill even that players at the professional level. Next up, when something happens (a multi-kill, some sort of trap, etc.) you have to yell exactly what happened in one word.

Get hit by plague in Star Craft? Yell: PLAGGUUUEEEEE!!!!!
Bunch of guys get stunned in LoL: STUN! STUN! AAAAGGHHHH!!!!!

Basically be exactly like thsee guise (but English, or whatever language you want).

I used to do a video gameplay commentary and it varied for what type of game I was commentating. If your commentating for shooters such as Crysis, CoD, BF, etc, I liked commentating in game during recording where i don't know what would happen next. If its a game like L4D, or any team based defend the base game, then I'll record and then add commentary afterward because sometimes I'll give tips to players to why I'm doing what I'm doing whereas in real time I wouldn't be able to say that.
