I think what you guys are experiencing is the same issue benchmarking the 590 I had.

Some titles will force you to crash or score lower in them after you pass a certain point.  Other titles seem to only be restricted by the voltage you can set (old school overclocking.)

Also a chance that Heaven is bugged, or the drivers are bugged.  I would for now, bypass using Heaven or 3DMark11 but use games.

Its old and outdated, but I documented a lot of stuff overclocking the 590.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1063263/gtx-590-flashing-overclocking-thread/0_50

The potential is there for them to have gimped the cards to make it feasible to sell 685s or 780s or what knot.  We do know that the GK104 specs are not the most impressive of the Kep family.

You mean wait for better drivers to overclock in Heaven and 3dMark11?

They may never come.  My point was to get into benchmarking some titles / playing them while overclocking.  You never know, I hit 873 MHz on a pair of 590s (so across 4 GPUs), something many thought was impossible.  At the same time, most of us could not get above 730 MHz in 3DMark11 without getting crippled by PDL or OCP.  Most assumed 730 MHz was the max for the cards, but I ended up benching everything under the sun and discovered there was a lot more performance but in actual games.  The less popular the better, thats when I realized nVidia was doing it on purpose.  Made it a lot easier to join team red for a bit, to see what else they had in store for future generations of cards.

The first thing we noticed, some benchmarks like 3DMark11 crashed when we got too high on 590s, like you guys in Heaven.  The post release drivers stopped the crashing, but limited our overclocks.  There was a method of bypassing, but it required a BIOS flash, and I was afraid of killing other peoples cards by releasing it.  If NIBITOR finds away around this "lock", I will definitely have another look at what I tried and offer a BIOS or two for experimenting.  Trouble is I don't have a 680 to test and it is risky.

I would think the opposite. Its proven this card based on a mid range GPU cranked to its limit so they could delay producing the bigger GPU.

Yeah if you just go by even the base clock, hitting the average 1250mhz is a 250mhz overclock, which is pretty decent. Going by Boost is still OK, not what I expected from a flagship, but if this card was really a ~700mhz 660 originally, then these kind of speeds are huge clock speeds and are probably the definite limit until the non-refs.

I finally managed to crash Heaven @ +205/+400, and then I noticed artifacts @ +195. I dialed down to +190/+400 and now will start proper stability testing. If these clocks stick, I'd be super happy.

+190/+400, boost clocks are 1313Mhz 1.162v @ 70C-80C and 1300Mhz 1.150v @ >80C

Ran lots of heaven and few runs of Metro maxed. So far I am loving this card.

If you can run Metro than you are probably good with that. Lucky indeed. Metro keeps crashing for me at my 3dMark11-stable +170 1294mhz, even at +155 it crashes

Edit: Metro seems to be stable at +150 1275mhz. But it definitely won't do the +170 from 3dMark11.
