Oh, surely it was, but the same idea applies smile.gif. It's the temperatures here causing people's issues. From the reading I'm doing, it seems my educated guessing is probably correct for voltmodded cards/etc. but, not for stock reference ones...

So if the card reads thermals, I guess the card needs to go under water to truly be a beast... well at least there is more incentive now.

It looks like 70C is the maximum for overclocking which is ridiculous. It looks like Kingpin only reached 114% power level as well. So if you want to OC this card you either need to wait for a non-reference cooler, H2O cooling or buy an aftermarket cooler.

I believe that is where Zotac is thinking it can hit 2000Mhz. If it is going 1400 at 114% think what it can do at 132%! But it won't get there with a reference card because of the crappy cooler/70C wall. Why didn't they make the limit 80C or even 85C? So the end user will have to have the fan at 85%(100% if a fan unlocker comes out) to get anywhere near 1300Mhz consistently.

I have a Newegg order for 2 EVGA cards I think I will cancel since I don't see the point of trying to keep the temps below the artificial limit of 70C. I will wait for some non-reference coolers, which probably means it won't be EVGA cards unfortunately. Not unless the thermal limit can be raised.

Nah, 60-70C isn't hard on this even on reference when overclocked. My fan speed was 64% and I maxed at 74C after 1hr of Heaven. It's still is quieter than my case fans.

If I set it to 70% it should stay below 70C, even with the max voltage that the card is allowing me to go (1.175v).

I wasn't noticing any type of downclocking until about 82C, according to precision.

Thanks for all the insight Murlocke, I'd rep you if possible tongue.gif

I suppose in the coming weeks we will see some progress be made with more mature overclocking software and updates. This card is unlike any other that has been released, and this "boost" feature brings an unfamiliar element to overclocking. Sure the card is amazing stock, but this is oc.net after all.

"Meanwhile GPU temperatures also play an important role in GPU boost. Our sample could only hit the top step (1110MHz) if the GPU temperature was below 70C; as soon as the GPU reached 70C it would be brought down to the next highest step of 1097MHz. This means that the top step is effectively unsustainable on the stock GTX 680, as there are few if any applications that are both intensive enough to require high clockspeeds and light enough to not push GPU temperatures up."

I took everything that was said recently, kept the GPU between 60-70C (took 70% fan speed), set the core to +150, etc but it still wasn't stable at +150. +135 is still the max for me.

I got the exact same heaven score keeping the card between 60C-70C, as I did keeping it at 78C-82C. Less than a 1FPS diff on min/avg/max. If I adjust fan to go above 82C, that's when scores start to slightly go down... but 82C is very hard to reach on this card.

Current OC is +135 core/+500 memory and it's 1 hour heaven stable (haven't tested longer). Extreme tess, 1080p, 4x AA, 16x AF, and all other settings maxed I get about 30FPS min, 64FPS average, 160max. My 580 got 44FPS average and 11FPS minimum while overclocked on the same settings.

So the card is quite i presume? How fast is spinning under load? % and RPM even though you cant really compare to AMD. I am hitting ~ 72C with 39%. By far the quites AMD card. I can hear it over my Case fans though since they are all @ 7v biggrin.gif
