How is the postbit "Online/Offline" status determined?

Semi-related to this bug:

A user posted in a thread less than one minute ago (and is still logged in), but their postbit is showing them as offline.

 

Back in vB, unless the user logged out of OCN, they would be listed as online for 15 minutes (even if they closed the browser). How exactly does it work on Huddler; is it based on having a tab of OCN open?

I think it is based on a user loading a page. I could be wrong though.

We make the same 15-minute assumption, "renewing" each time a page is loaded. If a user does not load a page within 15 minutes of loading their last page, they're considered to be offline. It would be incredibly resource-intensive to be constantly polling server->client to try and see exactly when someone is online or offline, and really isn't needed anyways.

I would guess that the scenario presented here is one covered by the small windows of time (that the engineering guys mentioned in the other thread) between various parts of the system updating to say "so-and-so is online now".

Yeah... are we really not classing that as an issue? So many separate places where a user's activity is shown, all of which are different and out of sync.

It seems very disjointed to me, and surely could be done a bit more efficiently.

I think that is probably the best bet for the immediate future - consistency items like this are always worth resolving at some point, just to better the platform, but given the scope of some of the other projects at the moment (mobile interface, several new mod/admin tools, reduction of JS dependency, overhaul of some homepage elements, etc) I think it probably falls a lot lower on the priority scheme.

Just another one to add here; I've been online for about half an hour, and yet the Staff listings aren't showing me as online:

I just want to add to zodac's last post.

Staff listing online/offline bits can appear to be online and offline at the same time depending upon the board section. I highlighted the issue with a red square for offline and blue square for online.
