AM2 Upgrade?

Thread Starter
Does anyone know if and when K8L might be achieved, and, will it be compatible with current AM2 mobos? I'm thinking its about time for me to upgrade, and I really enjoy AMD, always have been a fan. I know that Core 2 Duo is where its at right now, but I appreciate supporting the underdog. Comments and suggestions greatly appreciated.

When compared to Intel's manfacturing status and marketing, AMD is VERY much an underdog. Anywho, anyone else?

If you get an AM2 mobo, then the next-generation processors, K8L will be compatible. Am3 CPU's will be compatible, but DDR3 memory will not be. So if you want to upgrade your CPU, then you're fine. If you want DDR3 memory, you will need a new motherboard.

What would you recommend? How long until DDR3 mobos?

DDR3 wont' be out for a while (Mid-2007 at least) and it wont' be fast at first. It'll take a while before it gets significantly faster.

If you're going AMD (not a bad choice too ) then get an AM2 board for sure. I recommend the Asus M2N-SLI... Great overclocker too
It's SLI-compatible of course, but it does a lot more too. Look it up on newegg

I agree, if you want go AMD definately get an AM2 board.

Comparing Intel and AMD i personally believe Intel is looking much stronger at the moment, from what i read about the Barcelona cores i dont think Intel needs to worry, then again i may be wrong as im no processor designer .

If i was going to upgrade or build a pc at this time i would look for an Intel Mobo that will support Kentsfield and buy a cheap-ish core 2 duo, maybe an E6300 or 6600.

Hope that helps.

Budget wise, I always suggest the Biostar boards. More specificly, the Biostar TForce 550. OCs nicely, cheap, and good boards over all.

For something more high end, look into the Asus - WiFi thinger. Haven't really looked into it though.

I think Im going to stick AMD. I hear really good things about the Core 2 Duo's. as well as Kentsfield, and will not knock it. They are on top as of now with a VERY significant performance gain, as well as a marketing that consists of reasonable pricing... But, again, I'm partial to AMD. The only problem I'm having about a leap to AM2 is that I'm wondering if all new K8L's will be supported by the current AM2 boards like they say they are going to be. Also, I'm looking for good builds, with no excess of $600. This will need to include the motherboard, processor, memory, and a new PSU. I'm going to stay with my current 7600GT as I am very impressed with its performance, even when coming to Oblivion. Also, a special note on memory, I'd prefer 2 GB. I realize this will be difficult to achieve with $600 but its what I have to work with. Please try and keep it under 600, but at MOST 700. I can stretch if the rice/performance is worth it. I appreciate all suggestions into a decent build. Alright Chozart, lets see your specialty

Side note: I read on the Inquirer that 65nm AMD's will be coming out soon, maybe by next month?
