AM2 Upgrade? - Page 2

65nm AM2 parts will be out in December, but it will be extreme hard finds.

Dell is sucking up all the AMD processors atm.

Ah, that sucks, guess I'll go with a cheap dual core, 3800 x2 for the time being. Better than what I have now...and 2 gigs of RAM will definitely help. Looking at OCZ DDR2 800, For the PSU Im looking at the NUUO, or the 600W Rosewill, both have decent reviews. And for my mobo, I think Im going to go with the Asus M2N, with SLI, just in case I feel like picking up another 7600 until the realease of some cheaper DX10s.

It's a little over budget:

MoBo: Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI $143.99

PSU: Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 ATX12V 550W $89.99

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Windsor 2.0GHz Socket AM2 $163.00

RAM: Crucial Technology 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) $229.99

Total: $626.97

DDR2 800 is not really needed for an AMD system. AMD still prefers tighter timings over bandwidth, and generally, you won't hit as high an HTT, which the Intel boys hit way over 400MHz on their FSB. Now, what I don't know is if this RAM will work with the motherboard. I have heard those AM2 board, and particularly ASUS, is very picky with RAM. I think it's corsair that's recommended by ASUS themselves, but I am not sure. Check this out, and select a good, around $220 or so, DDR2 667 kit.

I think I heard a couple of members a while ago who had their NUUO fail. That, and it's low efficiency, moved it of my list of recommendations. Rosewill? Nay... stay away. Not worth the money, even if it came for free. They're just not reliable enough.

The M2N-SLi is very poor overclocker from all my readings online as well. And Chozart is very right.....if you want the most compatible memory for asus, look to Corsair. I think you can find the 6400 for around 250 and the 6400C4 for about 270.

Conclusion:

With your budget, I would wait a little longer. Save a few more bucks, so you can afford the higher-end motherboards (nForce 590)

That's not really a "very poor" overclocker.

M2N-E is considered to be a "very poor" overclocker, and I can still get it to do a 40% OC, and some people have done 60%.

It's a very decent and stable board, and very suitable for light overclocking (10-30%).

I think I'll wait as suggested... My system plays games decent right now...

I'm definitely sticking with AMD, as I've stated a few times now.

Thanks everyone for suggestions, comments, and concerns.

But I miss the joy of building... x,x
