Not everyone likes noise. I for one one changed my 7970's sli to IMPORTED gtx 680 top dc2 sli for silence with great performance :\.

The 5970 was a beast, not many bought it for a reason...same as the 6990...

I understand however the refference GTX 680 cooler isnt loud at all until you get up over 70% fan speed. I had a 5970, now that was a loud card.

Anyway, I never keep the stock coolers on for long as I always replace them with an artic cooling solution.

I cant stand it past 58% :\ my friend has one in his rig with a 212 evo on a 2500k @ 4.4

you're missing the point..we've seen plenty of 680s get as high as 1.4ghz..on boost
now we already know clock to clock its faster..so as long as it can stay relevant interms of clocks, it'll be faster..

HD 7970 is faster clock for clock than GTX 680 especially at the highest settings and highest resolutions. if you don't know atleast don't state the opposite as a fact.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7970_GHz_Edition/28.html

1920 x 1080

GTX 680 - 98
HD 7970 Ghz - 100

2560 x 1600
GTX 680 - 92%
HD 7970 Ghz - 100%

http://www.hardware.fr/articles/869-18/recapitulatif-performances.html

1920 x 1080

GTX 680 - 127
HD 7970 Ghz - 140

2560 x 1600
GTX 680 - 129
HD 7970 Ghz - 145

GTX 680 decisively wins Shogun 2, Lost Planet 2, Batman AC (FXAA). Batman AC (MSAA) ,BF3, Crysis 2 are close enough to call a tie. these games go to either card depending on the particular test scenario. But HD 7970 Ghz wins clearly in Alan Wake, Witcher 2, Anno 2070, Deus Ex, Dirt 3, Dirt Showdown, Metro 2033, Crysis Warhead, Serious Sam 3 BFE at the highest settings . Simply said HD 7970 wins more games and its wins in the most demanding games like Metro 2033, Crysis warhead come with significant margins. Those are the games where the performance makes a difference.

No, it isnt.

The reference GTX 680 wins nearly all benchmarks head 2 head vs the 7970/7970 GHz. While the GTX 680 DCii sweeps nearly all benchmarks in this review.( Yeah I know it's pre-overclocked)

First of all Radeons cant even run 16xQ AA in Crysis or CS:GO and many other games. I don't care if its faster I want to be able to turn on all the options possible. There are settings in games that only pertain to Nvidia which means you cannot crank the graphics to their full potential on a Radeon. This is where Nvidia shines. Vsync is another issue with Radeons and certain games. 680 GTX is a midrange card if Nvidia actually let their real flagship card loose against the 7970 AMD would have cried a river... AMD/ATI have always been for budget gamers. Anyone who wants real power with few issues goes the Intel/Nvidia route. thumb.gif

Then again, 16xQ AA is closer to 4xMSAA in image quality rolleyes.gif
How about Adaptive AntiAliasing for Nvidia? For AMD, it's simply a matter of selecting it instead of MultiSampling in CCC.
As for Nvidia-specific settings in games. Do you really consider it being good for the industry, you are actually hurting the industry by saying it's a pro that we have a situation where only one brand (out of three) can do certain tasks.

GTX 680 is just as much midrange as HD 7970. Implying the GTX 680 is midrange means Nvidia couldn't make their high-end GPU actually work, thus implying Nvidia are unable to make sound business decisions, Nvidia made the GK104 the base for their high-end GT 600-lineup because they saw what happened with their GF100 against AMDs Cypress GPU in 2010.
AMD/ATI have mostly had the strongest lineup in the low-end and performance segments of GPUs, that doesn't imply AMD are only for budget gamers. If Nvidia didn't try cater for all budgets, they wouldn't exist. In fact, Nvidia started out with budget-oriented graphics cards.
The driver issues for AMD are mostly for CFX-setups, and nobody in their right mind would imply Nvidia doesn't have any driver problems.

Nvidia has driver problems remember when Half Life 2 came out? You needed a Radeon to play it. However, Nvidia has always had the best drivers and best multi gpu support. SLI is very smooth and has way less problems than CFX. Nvidia usually tends to have a high minimum fps rate in most games. In most games turning on AA will reduce serious performance for Radeons. Vysnc drops fps on Radeons like crazy and try to game with a Radeon with vsync on a plasma tv very bad combo. Nvidia just has the all around better cards and way less problems. Of course it is bad for the industry to just have Intel and Nvidia run it. That is why people with less money buy AMD/ATI. If you want the strongest most reliable setup you go Intel/Nvidia its a no brainer. We are already starting to see AMD fail so much in the CPU department that Intel is going to rape us of money. That is obviously not good. It would be nice if the performance gap was closer like with ATI and Nvidia. I have owned graphics cards from both sides and CPU's from both sides since 1998 when I was custom building around the age of 15. My budget computer always runs AMD/ATI and my primary gaming monster always runs Nvidia/Intel.

The 680 GTX is a mid range card. There is proof everywhere on every review site. Gk104=mid range not the flag ship model GK110 that was supposed to come out as the 680 GTX. It will most like come out as the flag ship model to compete with the 8970 since the 7970 was a flop. When Nvidia saw how poorly the 7970 improved over the 580 Gtx they were not going to rush and release GK110 when they could release their mid range card and still beat the 7970 in most cases and milk the public of money. Nvidia made a monetary decision and not one I like personally. i would have liked to see a card finally take on Crysis by itself.
