A question on GTX580 Memory Overclock

Thread Starter
Ok guys, I've been wondering this myself for quite some time.

So I don't have my GTX580 yet, it'll be here beginning next week. I'm trying to figure out memory overclock and what I can get it to.

Techpowerup says my Zotac GTX580 memory is Samsung K4G10325FE-HC04, rated for 1250MHz or 5000MHz effective. Now When I look at the overclocking page, the memory isn't "stable." It's stock clocked at 1025MHz and they were able to get 1175MHz. Now, is that use due to heat issues or actual issues with how the memory was made?

I looked up the data sheet for the Samsung memory K4G10325FE-HC04 which is what it uses, and its rated upto 1.5V so I imagine I shouldn't be getting the memory too hot with over-voltage.

I plan to have memory cooling for it so hopefully that might help stability?

And lastly a few other question,

When you overclock memory, does it degrade over time? And why?

Lastly, if the memory degrades, is it reverseable if you revert back to stock memory clocks?

I've noticed quite a increase in my heaven2.5 and 3.0 scores with memory overclocked and gaming seems to run smoother in the intense explosions and effects scenes with a good memory overclock on my 560. Just wondering how much I can push the limits of the memory without damaging the card. I mean I should be able to get 1250MHz right?

Thanks guys!

It might be rated for xHz at certain (slack) timings - the chances are the bios is running the timings tighter and thus can't achieve 1.25ghz.

Yes, graphics memory (like any other circuit) deteriorates faster the more voltage you give it. It cannot be reversed.

I don't know what the stock voltages are for a 580, but you must remember that just because it's specced to run at 1.5v doesn't mean the 580's memory controllers are happy at that voltage.

FYI - when you do come to overclocking the memory, remember there are 2 voltages: VDD (input buffer & logic voltage) and VDDQ (read buffer, common rail with gpu buffer). I advise only to fiddle with VDD for overclocking, as VDDQ can damage the memory pretty quickly.

Is there any real way to test memory other then benchmarking?

Ran some tests this AM on my GPU.
Heaven3.0

2100MHz stock memory:
AVE: 52.4FPS
MIN: 31.5FPS
MAX: 117.1FPS
SCORE: 1320

2250MHz OC memory:
AVE: 52.6FPS
MIN: 27.5FPS
MAX: 118.8FPS
SCORE: 1324

2350MHz OC memory:
AVE: 53.5FPS
MIN: 35.9FPS
MAX: 122.7FPS
SCORE: 1348

So there is quite a difference when you OC memory with quite a boost in speed. The problem is the overclock has to be quite significant. ~12% memory overclock over stock.

The only voltages that I can monitor and control are the Core voltage on Afterburner. No idea what the other voltages are....

I think Fluxlite meant maybe that memory voltage in MSI GTX580 Lightning, if you have lightning series then you could add mem.voltage via afterburner. Other series dont have it.
