[Solved] Low points on i7 920 Linux rig

post #1 of 8
Thread Starter
I don't know what I should be getting but from the Intel Folding Event it should be more than ~1600 points per big WU

I was using this command to run folding, but each percent complete takes about 10min
Code:
./fah6 -bigadv -smp 8

Switched to this command, as rctrucker had recommended in the intel folding event. But the work units take just as long and worth just as many points.
Code:
./fah6 -advmethods -smp 8

Some things to take into account:
-I don't fold 24/7 b/c my computer is just too loud at night
-I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 (I've read that 10.10 is the breadwinner, but I've seen no supporting evidence.)
-I use EXT4 file system (once again, I've seen no support that ext3 is any better.)

My strange graph
526

Summery page
http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=608539

Some information that I thought would be more useful to others that do a lot of folding:
321
Code:
[settings]
username=Fir3Chi3f
team=37726
passkey=oh wouldn't you like to know ;)
asknet=no
machineid=1
bigpackets=big
local=6

[http]
active=no
host=localhost
port=8080

[core]
checkpoint=30

[clienttype]
type=3

Few more system specs:
CPU at 3.8Ghz
Memory at 8-8-8-24-T1
Target Memory Frequency 1530Mhz,
QPI at 4.800 GT/s

I'm going to be trying out the first distro that I've ever used as a Linux user, PCLinuxOS and I'll fold on it for a little bit and see how things go.
Am I just being impatient? Where is the support for ext and 10.10 being better? Why are my bigadv and advmethods WUs worth the same and taking just as long?

Have you only completed 7 units on your passkey? Once you complete 10 units you qualify for bonus points.

robbo is right, on your 11th unit, you should notice a large jump in points. Those units for 1593 points etc, are base points for quite large SMP work units.

Should I switch to small work units so I can belt these first ten out?

Oh, and my secondary questions, does anyone have links and the like to support the claims of 10.10 and ext3?

Alright, the PCLinux install is a failure for now. I'm thinking that the download may have been corrupt, but that is for another thread and another time.

I'm running with [small] and it does seem to be going much faster with just as many steps 500000. Each percentage takes about 5min opposed to the previous ten. I'd still like to know why 10.10 and ext3 is claimed to be the most optimal, but I suppose that isn't really the topic of the thread I've created here.

Edit: 5 minutes is probably only because I've lowered my overclock to ensure it wasn't faulting the install. I'll put it back up to 3.8 when I start it back up tomorrow, night all.

Edit again: Indeed, at 3.8Ghz it is about 3 min per percentage.

Thanks robbo2 and Wheezo, I appreciate it!

It looks like my points are finally off the runway, I've put my client back to -bigadv and we'll see how things go.

Irrelevant questions which will likely be researched more later (Click to show)
I understand it's off topic of my thread, but I'd still would like to know why ext3 and 10.10 is the chosen combo of the OCN folding community. Also, do we have a repository of rig setups and how much points they bring in? I'd like to get a good idea of what I should be getting in terms of points.

Looks good mate!

EXT3 is chosen because for some reason EXT4 is very slow at when it comes to writing the results to disk. So you lose a lot of time waiting for the results to write to disk. It's only for mechanical drives because I don't think the issue exists with SSD's.
