Worth messing with AMD Athlon 64 3700+?? - Page 2

athlon 3700 should be able to run 2.8ghz no problem assuming your board can do it, and any ati HD4000 series or nvidia 7 or 8 series should be all you need to have a pretty good gaming machine, just keep in miind that ram is pretty expensive and to run anything modern you will need 4x1gb.

AGP mobo. Not really going anywhere with that. I had a 3400+ on an old K8VX and it was just a bottleneck on a bottleneck. Thankfully the mobo finally quit because I'd prolly still be wasting time trying to keep it up to speed. Don't waste your time, money or effort on this setup. It's time to move on.

I guess I can't knock on it too bad, it lasted almost 7 years but that was without any real OC'n. Look at that old-school tech. Those caps and coils hanging out looks like something in a CRT TV from 20 years ago.

Move on, man. Move on.

If it was a dual core it might be worth saving if it has a PCI-e slot. Have one that I have to replace caps on that hits 3Ghz. And if you dont multitask heavily 2Gb is enough for almost anything modern.

Played Crysis 2 with medium settings on my 939 3800 x2 @ 3Ghz, 2Gb ram, and HD4850. Too bad the caps are blown on it ATM, looking to fix it and make it my media center PC.

My girlfriend has an athlon 64 x2 (dual core), I forget which one though. Runs XP great, and now her mom has something to use instead of hogging my girlfriend's laptop.
I just took a geforce 6800 from an old computer and put it in her's, my board supports pcie. I need to tweak the driver control panel for her but so far it's not too bad. If you can get something that's a step up on a 6800, you can do fairly well, especially at 1280 x 1024.

It's not really worth it, the performance scaling isn't that great for today's need except games made before ~2008. Modern gear is so much better, you should get a new comp imo.

Any advice tips or recommendations much appreciated thanks.

I have an Athlon 64 3700+ on an AGP board paired with a 7800 GS and 2 gigs of RAM. Its fine for browsing the internet or playing "mid-decade" games, but that's about it. I don't think you could put a graphics card in that that would make an appreciable difference except for old games like that - the CPU is just too antiquated. I gave mine to my mother.

What kind of temps are normal for this chip at idle and load using the stock heat sink?
