That's what it was! Pre-fetching!
The reason I recall it being 4GB is I have 2x2GB sticks in my FreeNAS rig. When I had one stick in (was going for power efficiency), I got the alert on my screen that pre-fetching wouldn't be enabled unless I had at least 4GB. So I put my second stick in and no longer got the alert.

What was your ZFS pool(s)? I do remember reading that the required RAM was dependant on the storage pools. However I think you might be right about the 4GB pre-cache limit.

I'm currently running a four disk RAID-Z.

That very well could be right, I imagine RAID-Z and Z2 would require the most CPU and memory due to the parity information that has to be calculated.

Weird, I had a 3 disk raidz. I guess I just remembered wrong :-/

Incidental, there's also a raidz3 now (sorry if you were already aware of this)

The usual, but no Ubuntu. Vanilla Debian, Fedroa 16, win7 64bit, OSX 10.4 and 10.6 (2 MacBook Pros, 1,1 and 5,2)

And then there is that "OTHER"

I run the Xen Hypervisor (4.1.2) on my ITX machine with:
- f16 dom0 -- Kernel 3.2.9 LXDE
- win7 domU -- Gaming!
- win8 preview domU -- Just for kicks / HTPC
- f16 domU -- Minecraft and VPN
