Backing Up Saved and Installed Games?

Thread Starter
So I am wondering if you can backup your saved or installed games? I just went through a hard drive failure and lost everything. The Xbox people say I can use the cloud, but I have to pay for gold membership to do that and lose it if I lose the membership. Do they make memory card (at least for the saved games) or can you use an external to back up things?

Thanks,

You can port your profile over to an appropriately formatted thumb drive (the 360 will do this, but make sure it's blank so you don't destroy anything you care about). Most 8 or 16 gig thumbdrives are sufficient. Then you should be able to make copies of most content on both the thumb and the harddisk. You'd have to manually copy back and forth though, as only the current "save location" will reflect your changes as they occur (they aren't mirrored).
