Battlefield 3 help - settings?!

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I recently brought Battlefield 3 and I'm struggling to find the right settings to play on. I get alot of spikes during gameplay, and I enabled the in-game graph and every like 15-20 seconds the graph spikes for a few seconds, then goes back down.

It's very frustrating and I'm not sure what settings I should use, so I thought I could get some help on here.

CPU: i7 960 @ 3.2 ghz (stock)
GPU: 2 x XFX 6870 1GB Black Edition
Mobo: P6X58D-E
RAM: 4GB Corsair Dominator GT (2 x 2GB)
Monitor: 1080p

I was looking at my GPU usage and it doesn't seem to hit 99% on either card. I also once got a DirectX error saying my 6870 has no more memory, so I'm thinking it's my VRAM causing the lag spikes.

What do you guys think? Should this be happening?

Thanks for any help smile.gif

Turn texture quality down to medium.
(I think its called texture quality, its the first one on the list)
This setting helps with people who are Vram limited.

That's odd, my 560ti 448-core only has 1280 MB VRAM and I don't get messages like that while playing on Ultra textures.

Do you have the latest drivers?

A couple things:
I know AA tends to tank performance on AMD cards for some reason, so you could try lowering/turning it off.
Ambient occlusion (AO) provides some nice eye candy but is also detrimental to performance. Can lower it from HBAO to SSAO or turn it off.
And by all means turn off motion blur.. by far the worst addition to any FPS if you ask me heh.

This is true. However I believe 2 6870's would be able to handle at least 2x MSAA without a giant drop in FPS.

His issue is more than likely that he is running out of Vram and its making his FPS do weird things.

OP: I would post this in the AMD GPU sub-forum you will get a lot more help there.

Thanks alot for your replies guys, +REP for help.

Does the BF3 auto setting detect your hardware and change the settings based on what you have? My auto changes to a mixture of High/Ultra - and that causes me issues.

If I use the Medium preset, it's much better, still looks great but I just thought I could pull off better settings tongue.gif

Thanks.

This game seems to have stutter issues with ATI chips, specially with 2x GPUs cards, My friend has a hd 5970 Double gpu and has the same problem, try to run the game with only one card and auto detect the settings for your gpu, see if the problem goes away
